Why is Dropbox resyncing all my files several times a week?

JUuth New member | Level 2

Lately Dropbox has been resyncing all my files (~3000) multiple times a week. This is very inconvenient as it uses 100% of my CPU and takes several hours to complete.

I only have about 3000 files in my Dropbox (~4GB) and over 30GB of free space on my computer. I'm not using selective sync, symlinks, or anything like that. I haven't updated my computer recently or made any changes to my Dropbox account. I'm on macOS Mojave 10.14.5. Any ideas as to why this is happening?

Hi @JUuth

Something on your computer is updating them. Do you have any sort of antivirus/backup type services which would be updating the files?

Remember even a slight change to the file such as updating last modified etc. would cause a change in the file and thus a resync.

The files themselves are not changing. I know this is the case because otherwise they would show up as having been edited recently in the Dropbox menu. "Last modified" is not changing either (I have files that haven't been modified since 2012 in there). Dropbox is resyncing all of the files for no apparent reason. I don't use any antivirus or backup service. I haven't made any recent changes to my computer or added any new progams. I've been using Dropbox for years, and this is the first time anything like this has ever happened. Again, Dropbox is re-syncing all of the files in the Dropbox folder and it's begun doing this two to three times a week. It uses 100% of CPU and is extremely inconvenient when it does happen because it takes a long time to finish re-syncing.

Hello @JUuth

Thanks for the additional information. It definitely gives us a better understanding of what you're seeing.

At first, I'd recommend giving this article a read which lists some ways to tackle high CPU/RAM usage.

However, I've sent you a ticket to the email address connected to your Community profile to further investigate this behavior a bit more in depth together.

When you have the chance, please check your inbox for my latest message and we'll take it from there. Thanks!
