deleting a locked (ghost) folder from my local dropbox

I was performing a Dropbox folder reorganizing when I came across two folders, that are both locked (with the little padlock) and refuse to be deleted. I managed to delete them it appears from my online Dropbox, but they stubbornly remain visible on my local drive with a little red (x) sign that indicates they have not been updated. I have searched through the community threads and tried to no avail to fix this through the Terminal, spending many hours in the process with no progress. I would appreciate any guidance toward solving this. Thank you.
