dropbox overwrites shared folder in the wrong hierarchy

dropbox overwrites shared folder in the wrong hierarchy

julius27jay
Explorer | Level 3

A friend shared a folder with me and we both have all the files of the same folder on our machines, both Windows 10.

As soon as I manipulate a file on my laptop in that folder it keeps getting overwritten by the version that is stored on the other PC.

What am I doing wrong, how can I change it?

We tried deleting the folder and copying it back into the shared folder.  When I try to restore the old file via the Web Version of Dropbox It still keeps getting overwritten with a message "your friend just edited bla.json".

I am Happy to hear back from anyone who can help.

Thanks,

Julius

Hey there @julius27jay, thanks for posting on our Community and welcome aboard!

Are you both making sure that the desktop app is 'up to date' after your edits in your system tray?

Also, could you please take a look at your events page and let me know how exactly are those changes logged there?

Apart from that, you can check a file's version history (within the shared folder) to see what might be happening.

Keep me posted on your findings, Julius!

Hey, thanks for your reply! I reinstalled the app, but that didn't make a difference...

Hi @julius27jay, generally, json files are actively used by apps on a frequent basis.

Are you certain that the file isn't open in another app or service on the second machine?

Could someone from the Dropbox team PLEASE contact me via Email and maybe call me so we can use teamviewer and solve this issue. I am SO CLOSE to getting really annoyed and switch to another Storage System. This has been so much extra work for me...

Your current support options are available on this page, depending upon your subscription.

Could you try ensuring that the second machine is switched off when you edit the file on the first machine? Does the file change at all?

If you then switch on the second machine, does it revert to the previous verison?

Thanks for your reply. We tried that and it does that RIGHT AWAY. So there must be an issue with Dropbox.

An interesting side note:

He invited me twice to that shared folder so i somehow had it twice and maybe thats where things got mixed up..?

When the file is immediately reverted, is the computer shown in the version history still for the computer which is shut down, or is it another device?

Is it the same user who's a member of the shared folder?

Do you currently have two shared folders on your account?
