i have a couple of files in my dropbox that i can't open.

The extension is .fdv

From what I understand, the error message that you’re seeing is through the website for an .fdv file type. Is the error message, “the file type can't be previewed” by any chance? 
 
If so, it's because Dropbox doesn't recognize this file type, as it’s not currently supported. However, if you have a third-party app that supports this file type, you should be able to preview it locally on your computer or mobile device. 
 
If I’ve misunderstood your question, don’t hesitate to get back to me with any additional info and screenshots (omitting personal info) illustrating the behavior you’re seeing.
