out of control activity in my dropbox

out of control activity in my dropbox

Explorer | Level 4

Overnight my Dropbox started filling up. I got an email that my box was full. Two days a go a full third was available. I can't stop it. I did a malware scan - machine is clean. The uploading out of control. Looks like my wordpressblog, and unrelated photo galleries from a web based application. Nothing is synced or connected in any way to drop box. The only thing I sync is camera uploads which has been turned off. But not by me. I changed the password. Didn't stop the uploading. Paused syncing until 8am tmrw. over 100k files were "syncing" out of the blue. Unable to delete the files fast enough and keep up.

Hey @Elll, I hope you're well today!

From what you've mentioned, it sounds like the upload might be from your local computer to Dropbox online, is that right?

Is it possible that you enabled the computer backup feature either when installing the app, or through the app settings?

The computer backup feature can backup files from your Desktop, Downloads and Documents folders, depending on which folders are selected in the setup.

Let me know if this seems to be what's causing the upload!

Yes! I thought about it all weekend - inadvertently my whole machine, over 400gb was backing up. How can I undo it. It was unintentional and I can't recall being asked by dropbox to allow it. I do not see a setting to stop it from continuing.

Many thanks, Ellen

You can disable the backup feature with the steps outlined at the bottom of this article.

In step 8, choose the option to keep the files on your computer, rather than Dropbox, to remove them from your Dropbox storage.

Hope this helps @Elll!

Many thanks! Considering how many steps it took to turn it off it surprises me how it seemed to spontaneiusly happen in the first place. I absolutely did not go through any of those steps to turn it on

I thank you so much for taking the time to help me. It worked.
