trying to free up space - going backwards!!

trying to free up space - going backwards!!

I have been deleting files from my (personal) account, mostly photos, to get below my limit (2.75 GB). I finally did, but now it shows I am over 3GB again. Also, on my recent activity, it shows music files, which I have never had in Dropbox, and when I hover over the little box icon in the bottom bar on my PC, it shows it trying to sync a music file. How do I get it to stop? I don't need or want music files in Dropbox, I have them on Google Drive. When I look at my list of folders in Dropbox, Music is not in there.

Hi @ptquilts, thanks for posting on the Community!

It sounds like you enabled the automatic computer backup feature in the Dropbox desktop application. Could you first check to see if have a My PC folder on the site?

You can also try disabling the computer backup from Dropbox using the steps in the above article to see if this helps?

Afterwards, you can move the folders and files back to their previous locations, which will also delete them from the Dropbox account online.

Keep me updated with any progress!

yep, that was it. So nice of Dropbox to decide I wanted to backup my whole computer without asking me (sarcasm). I'm sure it has NOTHING to do with wanting to sell me a premium plan.

ETA - just checked, even though I disabled computer backup, it is now on AGAIN. Do I need to restart the PC to get it to take effect?

2nd edit - in Preferences, it is still unchecked (do not backup PC) but again it tried to backup all my music files. Oy vey. I will be looking for an alternative to Dropbox, this is ridiculous and so hard to use.

If the computer backup feature is disabled, then you should be able to move your files out of the Dropbox folder to their default location.

Otherwise, could you try these steps to get to the hidden menu in the desktop app preferences, and then choose 'Reset OS folders locations'?
