Why am I showing I am out of space when I am uploading to someone else's paid shared folder?  I have the basic account as I rarely use Dropbox.  However, my friend who I collaborate with has a paid account and lots of space.  He's created a sharred folder on his side so that I can upload files we are working on together to his folder.  I am not uploading to my folder.  So, why am I out of space?

Because shared folders use up the quota of everybody involved.

So, if you do not need to have edit access to the files just use a File Requests link instead to upload: https://help.dropbox.com/files-folders/share/create-file-request

I do not need edit access.  The files I am uploading are for my partner to download and work on.  That's all.  So, I am still confused as to why uploading file to his shared folder would reduce the amount of space on my account.  That seems bogus.

If you're uploading, you're editing. Being able to add or change files in a folder is editing.

Because you're not uploading them to his shared folder. You're uploading them to a folder that exists in your own account, which happens to be shared with someone else. It doesn't matter who owns the folder. It exists in your account (because you're a member) so it takes up space.
