word files publicly visible

Explorer | Level 3

Hi to all the members,

I've been using Dropbox for years and today I spotted strange thing just accidentally, that I can see my .docx in browser even I am not logged in to my Dropbox account. Files are placed in Public folder. I tried with moving them into newly created folder but that didn't change anything, files are still visible. Public folder and newly created folder show that only I have access, and other files that I have in public folder are not showing publicly like this .docx files. To be precise, I opened .docx file while I am logged in, then I logged out and paste link and I can see the document. I tried with another browser, put the link in address bar and still can see the file. The page shows me Sign in and Sign Up buttons but I still can see the content of the file. I tried with google search and to find answers from community but I couldn't find similar issue. Can someone help me with this?

Hey there @Vladanm, thanks for reaching out to us here!

Can you clarify for me which link you're copying for the file? From what you mentioned, it sounds like you're copying the shared link for the file.

Otherwise, are you copying the URL for the file?

If you're seeing that the files are showing "Only you", then it sounds like it might be a shared link that you're copying there to be able to access the file when not signed into the account.

Let me know and we'll go from there!

Hi @Daphne,

Sorry for the late answer and thank you for joining me in this discussion. I think I understand what are you asking me. For example, if I hover over the file name in list of files, I see the link that is like

https://www.dropbox.com/preview/Public/filename.docx?role=personal

After I click on it, it redirects multiple times that I can see in address bar and finaly redirects to something like

https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fi/xxxxxxxxxxxxxx/filename.docx?dl=0&rlkey=19an4..................................

(I put some x's and dots to hide real chars in above links)

So, if you said that second link is shared link, that is new to me and doesn't look like something I've seen so far in Dropbox. I used to open context menu and have an option to get shared or public link or something. I think that is not a big issue cause random user cannot see that link without I giving it to him, but is still strange to me cause if I open, for example, image file, like with link

https://www.dropbox.com/home/Public?preview=filename.png

It doesn't redirect to link that is similar to .docx file does.

Thank you,

Vladanm

Hi @Vladanm, we've deleted the duplicate messages.

Could you check if the file has a shared link associated with it. If so, try deleting the link and let me know how it goes!

You can also see your shared links on this page.
