Can we have an option to schedule syncing through the desktop app?

Can we have an option to schedule syncing through the desktop app?

Hello!
It came to mind today that it might be interesting to allow for a short delay between the moment a file is added and the moment it starts synchronizing with the servers. I often find myself, for example, unzipping a complete archive into a folder but only wanting to access part of the contents, so I delete the unwanted files but dropbox has already started trying to sync them. It would help to avoid a certain amount of unnecessary network transactions. Perhaps the gain would be negligible though.

Hey @CarlB, welcome to our forum!

This is a great idea, and I can see that under certain circumstances, it would be very useful. I have taken note of your suggestion, and have sent it over to our devs. There’s no way to tell if, or when, this feature might become an option, but rest assured that your feedback will be reviewed

Thanks

I would like to second the request for a sync delay.

I am working with an application which takes several steps to save a file and find that I need to pause syncing when I am working with it in order to avoid failure errors.

One of the reasons I have stopped using google drive  is that the delay in synching is very ofter more that TWO days. That can mean that if you close the desk top, the files are stuck on the hard drive.

I then go to an appointment with my trusty and fast chrome book. Horror story the files I needed are not in the cloud!

Looking at the gdrive forum pages this has been a problem since at least 2014, with hundreds of user complaints. The excuses from Google are pitiful!! However one the answers was, "the files on the hard drive are there for offline usage, so why do you want quick synching?"

Perhaps I should expand on what I would like to see.
I am looking for a setting to delay syncing by a given number of seconds. I wouls use somthing like 30 seconds for delay in order to allow the file saving process to complete locally before the syncing occurs.

Also, What does it mean when it says this discussion is Solved?

does that mean they are adding a feature or that the answer is no?

I still think this is a good idea, and clearly there is a use for this as the instant locking of new files does cause a few issues.  I think it was marked as solved as I asked originally if it was possible, and the short answer was no!  I can't see why adding a configurable delay into the syncing would cause any issues, and it would sovle quite a few for me.

So if this discussion is listed as solved, are the developers even going to look at it or is this a dead issue?

I think they will ignore this thread, but there's a similar one that's still active, if you post in there maybe that will add some weight to the suggestion.

I use Dropbox everyday for a ton of files.  I am begging you find a way to add a 3-5 second delay before you start to sync files in dropbox.  When I create a file in GIS software I use, I constantly get errors coming back because the GIS Software hasn't even finished creating the files and putting the data into them before you try to sync.  This causes files to be corrupted and the software errors out.  It is extemely frustraiting to have to constantly go in and pause the sync and resume it.  This requestion comes with the same request as hundreds of other users of that software storing data in Dropbox.  If you'd like them all to call and explain the same thing, I will get the petition started.  Please advise!

Nice idea @PaulBruns!

I will forward this as a feature request to our development team,

to be taken under concederation for future updates.
