Dropbox client/integration for Roku

Dropbox client/integration for Roku

New member | Level 1

Hello, I just signed up for dropbox and I'm pretty excited about the features so far. Also seems reliable compared to other cloud storage I tried.

I have a few Roku 3 boxes and I'm converging on this as my standard equipment to drive my TVs and stream content. I'd really like to have a Roku 3 dropbox client that allows me to log into my dropbox and stream photos, music, and videos. It needs to comply with hidden folders rules.
Does this exist?
If not, please create!
We need a good way to view our archive on TV.
Thanks

There isn't an official Dropbox Roku client, but there are a few third-party solutions.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Robert. I had seen those third party solutions. They have pretty bad reviews so I've not tried them yet. I may do so.
But I think dropbox should create an official and solid client for the main platforms. It would increase the quality of their overall product if people could easily access their media for sharing on the TV. Also good advertising when friends see dropbox branded slideshows on a TV when sharing photos, video, or audio.

They do, https://www.dropbox.com/en/help/3 .

Leaving aside for a moment that Dropbox have never given any indication they wish to be a content streaming platform, the real issue for you is that Roku is a (very) niche market for Dropbox.

Realistically, this leaves three possible avenues open for the Roku community to explore.

  1. IMHO, the hardest. Convince Dropbox there are enough new paying (for Dropbox accounts) customers to warranty it.

  2. Get Roku to provide an app. If there's enough demand from their customer base, why not?

  3. Build your own solution. Dropbox are cool with third party apps and as you've already seen, this is happening.

You would need an app on the device that is capable of linking to Dropbox. As stated above, Dropbox does not have its own Roku app but there are third-party solutions. You'll need to look to one of them.

I have Dropbox on my Roku and the full movie is downloaded but only 14 min is showing when I try to play it on Roku?

Actually Roku / Dropbox read my mind and one month after my original post they released a Roku client for Dropbox.  And it does work!  I was able to login to my Dropbox account using my normal email address and password and view my file hierarchy.  Slideshows of my photos worked and its great to have an easy way to use my Roku to show my photos on the big TV screen rather than using a laptop.

The Roku Dropbox app is definitely crude and could use improvement.  The method for displaying and navigating the file hierarchy is not great.  For example only a few photos are listed and you have to navigate and click to display more.  Its not a great way to search, find, and display photos out of a large archive.

But its a great start!  Thanks Roku and Dropbox.  Please invest a bit more time in improving the app.  Very useful feature for both products.

Nice to see that Roku have made some progress on this for you Daniel.

I would note for Peggy and Andrea's benefit that it's not an official Dropbox client, but a third-party solution built by Roku for their users utilising the Dropbox API.

As such, it isn't supported by Dropbox, so any feedback or support requests need to be directed at Roku.

Robert,

What do I need to do, or who can I send an email to so I can get Dropbox and Roku to fully work together on my Dropbox channel. Under my Dropbox account is says that my Roku has full access, but will only play the first 14 min of my videos. I also tried the third party viewer "Couchy play" and it only worked for a short time and now will no longer play my videos in dropbox. I hesitate to pay for the "Roksbox" app due to poor reviews of that app having errors as well. It would be nice to bypass the third party viewer apps and be able to view my full videos with my dropbox channel on Roku. Again, any advice on how to make that happen.

Fifteen minute playback is in line with the same restriction imposed by Dropbox's own preview web player, so I would imagine Roku have leveraged that functionality in their app.

However, as I noted previously, it's not an official Dropbox client, but a third-party solution built by Roku for their users utilising the Dropbox API.

As such, it isn't supported by Dropbox, so any feedback and support or feature requests need to be directed to Roku through their own support channels.

Sorry that I can't be of further help in this instance.
