External/Alternate Drive Support

New member | Level 2

I can see from searching the forums this is an extremely commonly desired feature however I couldn't find any information on development. I recently purchased Dropbox Pro not considering that I couldn't simply sync my external drive. Unfortunately with my small SSD much of my files are stored on a removable drive which greatly reduces the utility of Dropbox for me.

Can anyone provide information about whether this is a feature that is being considered or even worked on? I am partial to Dropbox but I (and many others it seems) am trying to decide if I should explore other backup options that fit my needs in this regard instead Dropbox.

Dropbox typically doesn't release details about what features they're working on or when they will be available. Many people would like to see external drive support added. It has been requested for years so I really don't see it happening.

In the meantime, check out a utility called Boxifier.

Thanks for your insight. I had seen Boxifier but I was reluctant to shell out half a years worth of subscription to a 3rd party for this sort of functionality. I guess I'll weigh my options now that I know what they are.

I'll join the crowd who are looking for external drive support. As a Pro user I was able to ask Support directly

- Is there any hope that Dropbox will add a feature to make it easy for Mac users to put Dropbox on a JetDrive in the near future?

or at least

- Will I be able to safely use Boxifier - when they release support for Macs by end of the year - so that I can use Dropbox fully on a JetDrive?

The (very very fast) answer I received: "I apologize for the inconvenience, but in this case we are unable to provide support and answer your questions. You might also want to take a look at the Dropbox forums and see if another user can help."

I know there are countless numbers of threads dealing with this issue, but maybe since the title of this thread is general, it'll be a good one for other users to use to jump on the bandwagon.

My subscription expires next May - and I really love Dropbox otherwise - so I'm hoping that something positive will happen soon. And I'd very much appreciate any advice/suggestions/commiseration from fellow users.

From what I can see by reading through these posts, I have a problem that is shared by a number of other users. The hard drive on my work laptop is too small (230 GBytes). It is basically full.  The only solution that I can see is to have some or all of these files on an external hard drive, but, dropbox does not support external hard drives. Does dropbox have plans to implement support for external hard drives or do I need to look for another cloud solution? I know all about selective sync and I use it to restrict the files on my laptop so that is not a solution. Thanks.

Does dropbox have plans to implement support for external hard drives...

I'm afraid Dropbox don't publish their product roadmap.

Generally speaking, the first any of us know about new features is when they're released.

`Thanks Robert. I hope they listen to their customer base, at least those of us who have this issue.

It was easy for me to sync my external drive -- by putting Dropbox directly on the drive.

Go to preferences, then to account, then to location. That will let you move your Dropbox folder to a new location, such as your external drive. There are just a few things you have to be careful about: https://www.dropbox.com/en/help/89

It sounds as though you do not run Dropbox when you don't have the drive plugged in this way which may be suitable in some instances but unfortunately not mine.

My situation is that I have a small SSD in my computer with files that I want constantly backed up. I also have an external larger hdd with archived data such as photographs ect that is connected infrequently. I would love to be able to back these up into all the storage Dropbox provides but realistically I'm limited to whatever amount of storage is routinely connected to my computer.

With the caveat that when - not, if - it goes wrong and data loss inevitably occurs, it's been done entirely at your own risk. Dropbox are pretty clear they don't support external drives.

I like Dropbox quite a bit, which is why I upgraded to Pro. However, Dropbox advertises that it allows us to work the way we want to work. Well, a lot of us would like to be able to use Dropbox on external drives and without the issues described. They can, I think, fix this by creating a utlitiy that can sit on the external drive to prevent problems with using the external drive. Dropbox should think about its customers as we do have options.
