File Request - Option to NOT rename files

File Request - Option to NOT rename files

Hi,

I've started using the File Request feature recently. I upgraded my dropbox from the Plus to the Professional plan to have more tools for specific file sharing.

I put out a File Request to my collaborator only to find that Dropbox automatically prepends the uploader's name to every single file they upload. For my purposes, this is a terrible "feature". I am trying to receive hundreds of files from one person, and having to sit there and relabel every single one by hand is not useful at all.

The files I am receiving link to a master file and the link works according to the file names. So the file names MUST stay the same for this to work, otherwise the whole house of cards falls apart. Needless to say, this is very important for proper collaboration to occur.

Can you please add an option to turn the renaming "feature" on or off per file request link? Let your users decide if they want their files renamed! I'm sure it's helpful for some, but it is not helpful for all... 😉

A quick search shows that this request first came up over four (4!) years ago. Please implement this ASAP. Otherwise I'll have to look for another file sharing service.

Thank you for your time!

I use Dropbox to receive files from customers all the time. I am a robotics engineer and the files my customers send me are to help them troubleshoot their issues. However, the file names have to stay in tact in order for me to use them with our software. Therefore, every time they upload files, I have to remove their "Name -" which is VERY tedious because each set of files can be 150+ files. I have created a batch file to help with the process but I feel I shouldn't have to do this.

@WalterOh hey - it's the thread that I started on this topic that apparently isn't important enough to muster attention.....

Maybe not enough views here, but the other thread has almost 20 thousand views and goes back five years. How is this not important??

Why the bloody heck does the system add a person's name to the filename when they upload things? I HAVE TO RENAME EVERYTHING MANUALLY BECAUSE OF THIS! And I have been putting up with this for years! Please make it stop!

My company is pretty dependent on Dropbox, but we won't think twice about just going to Google Drive or Box completely. This is so ridiculous.

Please give an option to have the files sent via the File Request not have the file name renamed. Having the files renamed is a huge interruption to our work flow. As you know software references file names so when someone uploads a file and it gets renamed the software no longer recognizes the proper file and breaks everything. Every time we get files we have to spend time to remove the text that DropBox add to the file names and it is a big waste of time.

Please let us opt out of DropBox changing the file names. This a huge Direction to our workflow. As you know software recognizes file names and when someone upload something it gets changed and therefore we have to spend time to change all the files needlessly because DropBox added to them.

Hi Dropbox!

The automatic file naming for file upload requests has been a problem for some time.

Recently you gave us some options for setting file naming conventions (Thank You @Megan!) and closed this thread - https://www.dropboxforum.com/t5/Dropbox-ideas/Make-file-prefixing-an-option-file-requests/idc-p/6083...

HOWEVER, this does not solve the main problem at all. There is no option to NOT rename the files when someone uploads the files to the file request link. Some of us use this file request feature and work on large projects with many files and don't want all the files to be renamed with the uploader's name. We then have to spend so much time manually renaming the files to get rid of the uploader's name. It makes the whole upload request feature unusable when uploading a large amount of files unless instructing people to only upload file zips, which is not always possible...

PLEASE give us an option to not HAVE to include the uploader's name in the file name. We just want the option - it can be turned off by default, that's fine.

Thanks!!!! 🙂

Thank you, Staab!
It's hilarious that they closed and locked the thread and set the status to "delivered"  after 6 years, 20k views and numerous complaints WITHOUT EVEN SOLVING THE PROBLEM.

Please re-open the original post since the issue was not actually solved.

Thanks for reopening this.

Whether it gets enough votes or not, I really think you should consider this. There are numerous threads with tons of views on this topic, so clearly other people search for a solution to this problem as well.

But I think the voting will skew the numbers, as it is something you will only become aware of as a problem when you start using the file request upload option. So please consider this regardless. It really can't be that hard of a thing to add another option to the file upload request pane to have it NOT rename files...

Thanks! 🙂
