Have an option to shorten the URL of shared links

Our HOA uses Dropbox to distribute our newsletter. When we use the links provided by Share Link we have problems as the links are long and get truncated by some email systems. Our users are not computer savvy so they don't know they can just copy and paste the whole link. Google Maps offers both long and short URL's when you ask for a link to a map. Maybe that is something you could consider for Dropbox. Other than that I love it.

use a URL shortening service, the long link exists because its used to locate the file, the file is not actually sitting in a folder at that location.

I do use tinyurl but it adds a bunch of steps if I have to send the URL to 3 or 4 files. I have to Share Link, switch to tinyurl.com, paste link, click create url, click add to clipboard, switch to email, paste tinyurl link, repeat....

I guess doing the short URL as part of the Share Link process is too tough. At least I don't have to do this more than once a month.

Dropbox used to have shortened URLs built-in, but they removed them after many complaints.

"Complaints", Rich R.? Complaints about what? The only complaint I have is that the feature is gone. Short share URLs are a must, in my opinion, and as I see it, this is a glaring omission in Dropbox's otherwise superb service.

It's quite frustrating that they removed the short links. It was so helpful. Links are shared over text, IM, etc. We cant always hyperlink something or just paste long links everywhere. I have to use a bitly extension to get around this. The lack of this feature is just not ok for a company as mature as Dropbox.

When sharing a link to a file or folder, it would be nice if that link could be shortened within DropBox instead of having to use an external service like Tiny.cc or other.  This would be a great help when we are sharing a link that is likely to have to be hand copied by the recipient.  Also, it a QR code could be generated as well for the link, this would be beneficial when creating printed materials.

Would it be possible to add this functionality in a future update?

Thanks

Joe

Dropbox had it and removed it due to abuse.

Wow.  Maybe have it available for the Business version.

Thanks for the reply.

Not likely, considering that Dropbox used to have that feature. It was (mostly) removed because too many people thought the generated short links (db.tt) were spam. I say mostly removed because sharing with Twitter might still generate short links.

[Edited to add: I really need to refresh the page before replying after going AFK. Sorry Richard.]

Will dropbox have short urls (db.tt or similar) for their pro accounts?

I checked https://www.dropboxforum.com/t5/Learn-Discuss/How-to-share-a-Dropbox-File-or-Folder-with-a-Short-URL... and the answer wasn't too helpful.  They recommended using a 3rd party link shortener.

Dropbox should have its own shortener for db.tt domain or a different domain dedicated for shortening dropbox links.  The long links can be cumbersome to share sometimes.
