Mac OS X 64 bit version?

Mac OS X 64 bit version?

Joel Y.
Helpful | Level 7

At what point will we see a 64 bit version for OS X? It is one of the last of my always running apps that is 32 bits? While many will say it is not necessary to have a 64 bit version that 32 is just fine, there are background processes that run to support 32 bit apps running on a 64 bit machine. Since just about everything else has been converted by their developers, isn't it about time for Dropbox to make the change?

Thanks!

I add my support to this request. Dropbox is the only process on my Mac that is 32 bit. At least I'd like to read an explanation as to why it takes so long. Are there some technical difficulties ?

After Spotify has now also finally switched to 64-bit, Dropbox is really the last service running in 32-bit 😕
Would be really nice, if that could be changed!

Dropbox is the last 32-bit app on my Mac. OS X has to load 32-bit system frameworks into memory in addition to the 64-bit versions already loaded in order to run Dropbox. (https://developer.apple.com/library/mac/documentation/Darwin/Conceptual/64bitPorting/indications/ind...) Therefore, Dropbox is consuming more memory than necessary. It's alarming that we're halfway through 2015 and a utility as widely used as Dropbox is still in the age of 32-bit only. The vast majority of Dropbox users have no clue what 64-bit means and why it would provide an improvement. Maybe it's time a utility as ubiquitous as Dropbox should bring their app to 2011 for no other reason than to provide the best. I have my fingers crossed that we'll finally have a 64-bit version by 2020.

+1

It is totally crazy that DB is 32 bit in 2015. This is Evernote-buying-Skitch-and-ruining-it levels of poor service.

I was listening to MacBreak Weekly this week and Ashley Nelson-Hornstein of no less than Dropbox was in their discussion about 64-Bit devices and how great it was for software, etc.. All I could think about was why it was taking so long to turn the Mac Client into a 64 app?

This silence is deafening from Dropbox on this. This is one of my last two always running apps that runs at 32-bits. This is such an easy fix to reduce the overhead of the app. All these other bells and whistles they keep adding offer little value to me. Updating the app to 64 bit for the sake of resource utilization would go a lot further.

As others have said, Dropbox is the last 32 bit process running on my Mac. Funny that a Company as large and rich as Dropbox has not put in the effort to bring its code up to modern standards. Even mobile phones are 64 bit now!

Dropbox team - I just wanted to let you know I've removed dropbox from loading on startup.

You haven't been providing any information here about your intent on providing a 64 bit version and I'm not going to stick around in the dark with you, making my computer load all those un-needed libraries.

I've begun to search for other solutions and I'll urge my (mac) friends and colleagues to do so as well.

I hope you are ready to lose customers over this.

They have, actually. Dropbox have said on numerous occasions that as there is no business/processing/speed benefits of releasing a 64bit version, they wont do so at present. If and when there becomes a reason to do so, they will.

Yeah. Except they are wrong.
