Mac OS X 64 bit version?

Mac OS X 64 bit version?

Joel Y.
Helpful | Level 7

At what point will we see a 64 bit version for OS X? It is one of the last of my always running apps that is 32 bits? While many will say it is not necessary to have a 64 bit version that 32 is just fine, there are background processes that run to support 32 bit apps running on a 64 bit machine. Since just about everything else has been converted by their developers, isn't it about time for Dropbox to make the change?

Thanks!

Is it just me, or did Dropbox recently update to the point where it now runs as a 64 bit app?  Running version 3.14.2 on El Cap.  Shows 64 bit across the board for me.

It's getting there.

From the v3.14.2 release notes

  • [Mac] On 64-bit OS X, Dropbox will run as a 64-bit application (except for dbfseventsd)

Great! Mine is still 3.12.5 - how do we force an update?

You can use this link to download both stable and test builds.  The 64-bit build is still in testing, so you need to be aware it's not an official release yet.  There's a drop menu at the top of that page that lets you switch the view between stable and testing builds.  It's good to know a stable build is on its way.  Before now, I don't think we even knew whether they were working on one.

Become a beta tester, like Marc L.

Drop in at the Desktop Client Builds forum, or tick Include me on early releases.

A note of caution: Beta tester means exactly what it says, there will be bugs.

No complaining if you go and bork things on a machine you rely on, ok.

64-bit version has been released (except for dbfseventsd)

After upgrading to 3.14.5, I began having networking issues.  My MacBook Pro wouldn't stay connected to wifi.  It would connect for a moment and then disconnect and reconnect and then repeat.  None of the other wireless devices in my house have an issue.  It was clearly isolated to my Mac.  Still, I power cycled the router, but it didn't help.  Rebooted my Mac, but it didn't help.  Uninstalled Dropbox, but it didn't help.  Rebooted into safe mode and reset the NVRAM, which seemed to help at first.  I then installed Dropbox 3.14.5 to see if the issue would return and it didn't until I rebooted.  Rebooting into safe mode and resetting the NVRAM and then booting normally didn't help this time.  This time I hard reset the router to factory defaults and reconfigured it.  I also completely uninstalled Dropbox again and rebooted.  I've left Dropbox off my computer and the wifi seems fine so far.  I've rebooted several times and it reconnects.  I can't definitively point to Dropbox as the culprit, but it's the only thing that changed on my Mac immediately before the wifi issues began.  I'm leaving Dropbox off for another day.  If the issue doesn't return, I'll reinstall it and see if the issue returns.

It's still not fully 64-bit on OS X. The agent itself dbfseventsd is running in 32-bit mode. I.e. will still force the system into dual 32/64 mode, consuming additional memory.
