Need iOS text editor that can search in text files

Need iOS text editor that can search in text files

New member | Level 1

Since the Dropbox app doesn't have search once I open a simple text file, I need to find a text editor that can connect to my Dropbox account, and has a simple search feature. I don't even care if it can edit. The file I have is 6,000 lines and 33KB so it's not small but not huge either. Recommendations on a simple iOS app that can do searching inside the text file?

I believe Notesy for Dropbox has built-in searching, but I don't know if it will search through unopened files.

Thanks for the suggestion. I don't need it to search through unopened files, just the file I open. $4.99 for just the built-in search functionality I need. I'll see if there are any other suggestions before I make a purchase. Thanks.

This should really be a built-in feature on the app. If you have the text file open in the app, then all of the text in that file should already be loaded into the program's memory and thus is readily searchable. The developers just need to add a Search button at the top of that screen that will let you enter some text to search for. Then have a simple interface that lets you jump to matching text in your file.

Really not that hard for a developer to implement. We need to ask Dropbox to enhance the app to add this feature. I posted this idea in the community forum if anyone wants to piggyback on that.

The ability to edit a plain text file in the Dropbox app on iPhone or iPad is a great feature. But it's missing the ability to search within the file for a piece of text. Once a text file is open, there should be a button/interface on the screen that lets you enter some text to search for. Then it searches the open file for the target text and lets you jump through the matching results.

This seems like a fairly easy feature to implement and one that should fit well into the existing interface. Dropbox: please add this enhancement to the Dropbox mobile apps!

Thanks for continuing to improve an already great product. I love, love, love my Dropbox Plus!

I have exactly the same use case.  So frustrating!  It must be simple to implement!

I would also like to see a search function in the mobile apps, so that one can search in text files - like one can do in Word files. That would be great enhancement.

I can edit a file, but to search for a text string in a .txt file seems impossible.  How can I edit a file without being able to search for what I want to edit.  Yes, I can scroll forever, but give me a break.   I find dropbox's documentation and the usefulness of the dropbox viewers/apps to be rather poor.  How hard would it be to fix this?

Share a feature request.

When we open a text file (.txt) in Dropbox App, it would be much easier if we can search within the file.

Usually Dropbox is used to store some important info files. When we open a text file, it's hard to find what we want except scrolling down and read all the info.

The  search only needs to be the simple string matching, no fancy functionality needed.
