Password of desktop app settings

Password of desktop app settings

hi, I´d like to know if it is possible to put a password for the settings. I use Dropboxplus and I have my acount in 3 computers. One of them is for me, but the other two computers are for my employs. I have a lot of personal things in my dropbox, so I use the selective sincronization in the other two computers. But the problem is that they can select folders as they wish and sincronize them. Is there a way to lock that? thanks and regards

No, there is no way to lock Dropbox settings.

What you're doing is very risky. Anyone with access to the account settings, which they can easily get to, could unlink all the other devices and, potentially, take over the account. Basic and Plus accounts are meant for individuals and are not intended to be shared with multiple people.

Hi Rich,
thanks for your answer.
Do you know if the Business account allow to solve that?
thanks and regards

Yes, a Business account is meant to be used across a team of people. It will allow each person to have their own files, as well as access to a team folder that is shared amongst all members of the team.

Note that with Dropbox Business you still cannot lock your settings menu, instead you would have numerous accounts on the machine which you can then allocate out to people (1 per log on probably)

I've created kind of workaround (for Windows only, sorry).

This solution is controling access to menu in Dropbox client (Desktop app). After installing this solution, if user tries to access menu in Dropbox client - password is requested. If password is correct, access to menu is allowed for 60 seconds. After that interval passes, password is again requested. In that way you could select which folders should be synced and then password protect access to Dropbox menu where user could change that preference, so user on that computer could access only data in synced folder that you selected.

Solution is freeware for personal and business use, hope you find it useful.

If you have any problem, feel free to contact me.

I have a security suggestion regarding access to the Dropbox-dot-com website via the system tray icon. I have one folder from my DB account, shared from my home, to a work computer. The DB icon is, therefore, visible in the system tray. If I click on the 'globe' icon from the system tray app, DB-dot-com automatically loads giving access to not only the one, shared folder but to my entire DB. Since this is on a work computer, I really don't wish to offer the possibility of others obtaining access to my entire account (just the one folder I have set up for work.) I realize it would be very inconvenient to force a separate login to the DB website everytime you wanted access; however, it seems that this could be an option in the 'settings' area for such instances as I'm describing. I already have 2-factor authorization setup for normal login activity, but this does not come into play in the above scenario. Having this as an option would at least allow another layer of security should someone desire to have it.

Thanks for listening!

Secure the comptuer user account and no one but you will be able to access it. If you're using a shared user account on the computer, then you shouldn't install Dropbox.
