Please stop putting links on my start menu

Please stop putting links on my start menu

Link to original question.

I like having a tidy start menu, and I have a perfectly fine link to Dropbox on the start menu itself, but I constantly find that the program has created a folder (%programdata%\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Dropbox) containing the exact same link, and a readme file as well.  I keep deleting the folder, and it keeps coming back.

This is apparently a feature, not a bug.  Please make it an optional "feature".

Similar to this complaint: https://www.dropboxforum.com/t5/Dropbox-installs-integrations/Stop-putting-links-om-ny-start-menu/m-...

It's 2021, there is no need to have the shortcut inside a folder on the start menu. Just have the link at the root of the start menu like everything else. I don't need a separate shortcut to your website in the start menu. I know how to get to dropbox...

I've made a workaround by using Windows Task Scheduler to run the command

cmd /c rmdir /S /Q "%programdata%\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Dropbox"

on startup.  It deletes the folder and content.

I agree with OP, my start menu set up is based on my preferred preferences and every time Dropbox updates, I have to remove the folder again.

As a user, it makes me feel Dropbox doesn't care what my preferences are. Personally not a fan of authoritarian design.

Thank you Gwillewyn for the Task Scheduler solution. MVP!

Just registered to dropbox forums to say this again.

Please remove this crap feature from dropbox. It is enough when Dropbox creates start menu folder and shortcuts once during the install process and never does this again (during updates). I have my own start menu structure, with dropbox shortcut inside no folder and this is making me upset everytime. Every few weeks the start menu folder and shortcut reappears and i have to delete them manually again.

I dont want to use or make any workaround as no other program on my system does this.

Thank you

i 2nd this. it's at this point i have to delete the folders from my start menu almost every week and at this point it's starting to piss me off to the point where i'm debating to uninstall dropbox and find a different option because i don't want to have to implement home-made "hacks" to keep my start menu clean.

Please fix this stuff, it's annoying as hell

EDIT: I've seen people say it's not possible, i call bullsh*t on that, the program is a bunch of code, you have to code crap like this IN, you can code it OUT!
