Rename before saving in Dropbox Android app

Rename before saving in Dropbox Android app

Hi. When I'm using Dropbox for iOS I can easily rename a file before saving. Right there, in the same "choose folder to save" screen. I just have to touch in the filename. But in the Android version of the app I can't do this. When trying to share something to my Dropbox app I can only choose which folder I want save, or even create I new folder, but I'm not able to rename. Only after I have already saved the file that I will be able to rename it. That's a big issue, specially because a lot of apps, when exporting a file, usually generate a file with the same name (photo.jpg for example), and when I try to save to Dropbox, I have to check if there isn't another file in the folder with the same name, otherwise it will be automatically replaced by the new one. That's very annoying when you are trying to organize your pictures, documents and etc. Am I doing something wrong, or is this really a feature that is only available for iOS app? If it is, please, it's about time Android have an app just as good as iOS version. That is no excuses for that.

When saving/adding ("sharing") a file from Android (eg Gallery) to Dropbox, it's not possible ATM to rename the file.
This feature exists in Drive but I have not found a way to rename in Dropbox (only after saving, which obviously wastes time).

Really, it is big problem. In my android mobile, when I want to save to Dropbox a pdf file (already with a file name) opened with android native pdf viewer, when goes to Dropbox the name is given just VIEW without extension and I can only select the folder, but cannot give a name. This is strange. In Google Drive, for instance, when selecting folder, I can give a file name of my choice, whichbis a great and easy solution.

Please, Dropbox dev team, consider this issue as a priority in your work.

Thanks.

Hey @theethorn, and welcome to our Community!

Can I ask that you verify that the OS installed on both the iPhone, and Android are up to date (for Android 11, and for iPhone 14.4.2), and so is the Dropbox app?

If you could share some screenshots, recreating the issue I'd appreciate it.

Share the info with me, and we can take it from there! Thanks!

Guys, the best "fix" I can honestly suggest, is for you to simply move on from dropbox. I've been using Google Drive (100gb) for more than an year. It has plenty of space for a cheap price and I have no issues whatsoever with it, including when renaming files while saving, no matter if I'm using the android or iOS version. It just works as expected. I don't miss dropbox at all since I have changed. Whish you all the best!

Exactly what I've done.  We moved out cooperate accounts over to Google Drive.  I moved my personal stuff to iDrive.  Dropbox simply does not even responded to the most basic functionality being missing.  Not able to specify a file name when you save?  That's crazy.  Same thing with their Linux client.  You literally cannot change the location of the dropbox folder.  It's hard coded into the app.  Logged the issues years ago and nothing.
