Stop Dropbox from opening Camera Uploads folder

Stop Dropbox from opening Camera Uploads folder

I enjoy Dropbox's automatic Camera Uploads when connected to iPad or iPhone. However, it is a super annoying behavior that Dropbox automatically opens the Camera Uploads folder whenever it imports any photo, which also causes privacy concern when someone else is sitting on the side. I really want Dropbox to just simply disable this behavior so that Camera Uploads works silently without opening Finder window, or add an option for the user to choose whether he/she/they wants the Camera Uploads folder to be automatically opened in Finder when new photos are added. Some other users have also expressed their frustration in https://superuser.com/questions/567184/any-way-to-prevent-dropbox-from-opening-the-camera-uploads-fo...

I will really appreciate it if the engineering team could just disable this behavior immediately while working on a toggle in the preference.

Hi @be20!

I dropped by to let you know that this idea is going to need some additional support before we can share your suggestions with the team.

For that reason, I've updated the status to encourage more users to back you up!

See you around the Community and take care!

@Walter I appreciate the idea of voting by the community. However, I think the development team should not completely rely on the votes, and some features should be based on a rational deliberation rather than popularity on the forum. Afterall, people in this community is only a small portion of Dropbox users, and if I had not been infuriated by this behavior I would not have tried to find a conduit and eventually posted this suggestion (which seems to be the only way I can "beg" Dropbox to make the change).

I do understand that you don't want to change other users' experience without getting "support", but the solution is easy: you can just keep the current behavior as the default and add a simple toggle in the preferences (e.g. a toggle to enable "silent camera upload").

Many little technical improvements are "boring" and will not attract many people's attention (like votes), but they are crucial. Those include but not limited to security improvements, and addressing concerns about privacy. The suggestion I made is exactly related to privacy, and is also related to the fact the nowadays people are more frequently sharing their screen due to remote work under current pandemic. Here is the senario that I repeatedly encounter during screen sharing in a video conference: when I am sharing the screen of my laptop with colleages, I feel that I want to write something on my iPad with apple pencil and share it with them so I connect the iPad to the laptop via a USB cable. Then the Camera Upload folder of Dropbox pops up on my laptop screen (the screen that is still being shared) with all my private photos, and everybody in the meeting can see them until I switch the shared screen to the connected iPad or until I close the Camera Upload folder. If the meeting is a recorded one, my private photos will be permanently floating somewhere around on the Web.

You may argue that I can avoid that embarassment by turning off the screen share on the laptop before connecting to the iPad. However, during a meeting, the speaker is focused on the presentation and will almost never have the chance to remember such detail like "turn off current screen sharing before connecting to iPad".

If you really want an appealing headline to justify my suggestion, I have prepared one for you.
"Dropbox added a feature to protect user privacy in video conferencing"

Isn't it attractive to investors, if you care more about them?

This is such an awful feature to not be able to disable. It ruins the macOS multiple desktop spaces functionality because plugging in my iPhone will a few moments later as I'm in the middle of doing something whip my screen to a different space to show me the Finder window that Dropbox opened. Thanks for interrupting me and stealing focus.

This is one of those "frustrators" when you evaluate product quality. It makes me really resent paying for Dropbox when it routinely frustrates me several times a day.
