Sync Prioritization

Sync Prioritization

New member | Level 1

Usually i am happy user of dropbox,
I often use public folder to share files with our team, usually i put the file in folder and withing 5-20 secs it's synced(small files)
but sometimes there are cases when it takes hours, cause the file i need to sync ASAP is in the line with our files for syncing which are not so important for me now.

Is there is any way to force sync specific file ASAP?

Is there is any way to force sync specific file ASAP?

No, there isn't. All files are sync in order by size, smallest to largest.

You could temporarily move all other files that are syncing out of the Dropbox folder, but that's usually more trouble than it's worth.

Dropbox developers should really think about adding this feature!

I have been using dropbox with an additional business account recently, which occassionally is overloading my bandwidth, in order to use chat and skype and so forth i disable the syncing during those times.

Now i wondered how can i sync a specific folder only – while i set the status to paused syncing.

The way i would wanna do that is via the context menu in the finder, clicking right and then "Sync this folder"

I forgot to mention that the selective syncing in the preferences is not usefull in this case, since i dont want to mess with the setup as i would have to revert it back at another point

Well would u consider implementing such a feature?

I dont work for Dropbox so cannot comment.

Dropbox, however, do not release roadmaps.

DB has been asked over and over for priority control over what is syncing, many times suggested with just such an option (although not connected to "while paused"). IMHO, The difficulties with creating such an options would be minor, they maintain a list of files still to sync, so could very simply use a context menu option to then trip a move all matching items to top of list (which is possible as the list is sorted into smallest files first, but fails to sort when huge volumes of files are being upload, so I know its possible for the list to be in any order)

Think of this feature as "express delivery." I have a bunch of files syncing, but other people on my team need *this* file right now. I can right click that file and give it priority to be next in the sync queue. If I'm paused, like on a train, choosing express delivery will sync that single file even though I'm paused. I can't tell you how many times I've needed this feature. It would make a good Pro/Business only feature to motivate upgrades ...

We're often shooting quite a bit of data around between sites, and can get into a situation where we are simultaneously transferring some very large files, as well as some urgent tiny files. Currently the only workaround is to leave the big files syncing and manually upload the small files through dropbox.com, which is really painful.

Another scenario is that we have two very large files to transfer, both important but we want to be sure one is transferred overnight. Currently the only way to ensure this is to transfer them one at a time, which isn't very fun when you need to set an alarm for 3am to get up and copy the next file across. This seems very "un-dropbox!" it should all be easy and automatic.

It would be a great general feature to be able to prioritise uploads/downloads. This can be a simple transfer list with buttons or drag to reshuffle them. Prioritizing the transfer order is common in other heavy data transfer situations, e.g. torrent clients
