Sync dropbox across multiple locations/hard drives

Sync dropbox across multiple locations/hard drives

I have a larger dropbox account than my primary hard drive. It would be great if dropbox could support virtual links to files outside of it's default location, without those files having to also be in the main dropbox folder. I am aware of shortcuts/aliases on windows/OSX, but those don't solve the problem if my primary drive has limited space.

This is one workaround, but native support through the Dropbox client would be ideal: http://bobmckay.com/software/split-dropbox-across-multiple-drives

Just adding my support to this request; I feel like this is an essential feature given the nature of how many (most?) people use Dropbox; especially those with higher data allowances (1TB+) and given the nature of most laptops, having less native storage than that.  Working from one or more external drives, and having important files spread between multiple locations that need to remain separate is very common, especially for those working with media files.

For example, photographers having a smaller 'working directory' with a project they're currently working on, as well as any cataloging/image-library information, stored on a laptop's native drive, that is most likely significantly smaller than 1TB, and then a separate external drive with other projects (both past work, and work that hasn't made it through the editing stage yet).  Both of these locations are important to have backups of and unless there is a native solution I haven't found or figured out yet, it is impossible to do without two backup solutions or sketchy workarounds.

I have Dropbox Pro (1TB) now, and get around this issue by also using Google to back up the 'working' directories, but frankly this is a ridiculous solution, and as soon as I can consolidate backup solutions, I will.  So far, I prefer Dropbox's interface and handling over Google's, so I hope that you're the first to offer this, but sooner is far better than later!

Upgraded to Pro a few weeks ago and just installed a new Harddrive, planning to move parts of my dropbbox to it, only to find out it doesn't work?

This really feels like a feature that should absolutely be in already...

Dropbbox please? 😛

I've been using DropBox for years, but always the free version since it would've been very expensive based on my true backup needs (couple TB long before DB existed) so I've stuck with manually mirrored harddisks (forget RAID), externals and an external at another house that updated several times a year when I visit.

I randomly took at their pricing and was impressed that 2tb was only $12.50 a month and that'd cover the majority of what I *need* backed up.

Then I found this thread and coudn't believe that the upgraded clients don't have features like multiple directories or drives as syncing locations on the same device, or the ability to flag files as "do not delete" even if there's not a copy on a drive that is semi-synced (i.e. doesn't have that file).

Are you serious DropBox?  Almost half way through 2017 and you STILL haven't implented this seemingly elementary feature?  I'll defintely be sticking with the free version until you guys build in this functionality, or have to look elsewhere to spend money.  I'd like to give it to you not if I'd be restricted to syncing a single "dropbox" folder.

I just spent over $100 on a new external hard drive to store my design files on since they filled up my Mac's internal storage.  Got everything moved onto it only to find out I can't sync my EHD with DropBox?  Are you kidding DB, move into 2017!!  I PAY for dropbox so I don't have to store the same stuff on my computer and fill up the drive.  Might need to search for a solution elsewhere! 😡

Then you've misunderstood the purpose of Dropbox. The entire point is to have your files on your computer, syncing with the files in your account online.

Yes, you can move your Dropbox folder to an external hard drive but it is still not recommended.

Yes, please. Seems like an obviously useful feature that is entirely missing. Being able to split off a working folder onto smaller SSD (since 1TB and greater drives are still quite expensive) would be incredibly beneficial for those of us that are working with files where disk access speed can improve performance.

IF this isn't resolved by the time my one year subscription expires I'm cancelling and trying another service.  Ridiculuos how DB is ignoring this common request.
