After renaming my user profile, Dropbox won't start on my Windows device. What can I do?

Hi everyone.

 

I'm having a strange problem with Dropbox in Windows 10 (Windows Server 2019 actually).

 

Because of an issue, I had to rename my profile folder from:

 

C:\Users\John

 

to

 

C:\Users\John.DOMAIN

 

I renamed the folder, tweaked the profile folder in windows registry and windows is working nicely. No issues.

 

However, Dropbox refuses to start showing a message: (may not be literal as in my case it's in spanish) "Unable to start Dropbox. Normally this is caused by a permissions issue..."

 

The log shows:

As I see, the issue is that Dropbox is keeping somewhere the old profile folder. As it has been renamed, it's not found.

 

But I'm unable to find where this information is saved. I searched all the registry and inside all files in my profile folder. That path is not found in any file or inside the registry. Even if I search only for "instance1". No match either inside C:\Program Files(x86)\Dropbox.

 

I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling Dropbox without success.

 

I've also tried uninstalling, restarting and reinstalling. No success either.

 

I've found some topic in these forums talking about an identical issue but for linux. In that case they moved and deleted some folders and libraries besides uninstalling the program, but nothing that could apply to Windows as far as I know.

 

Is there a similar troubleshooting procedure for Windows?

 

My temporary solution has been to make a junction from C:\Users\John to C:\Users\John.DOMAIN (it worked) but I would like a clean Dropobox install, without leaving unnecessary junctions and garbage in the system.

In this case, I'd suggest an advanced reinstall to remove all the previous settings that the desktop app had, which is what I believe you're referring to with the Linux steps you mentioned.

Hi Daphne.

That was it! It worked.

Something might be left in those folders refering to the old profile folder. 

It's working fine now.
