C drive too small for Dropbox, I want to use the other partition (ie 'D' drive)

C drive too small for Dropbox, I want to use the other partition (ie 'D' drive)

My HP computer's hard disc is 2Tb, but HP set it up as two drives, with the C drive being a tiny 120Gb, meaning I will never get the full use of my Dropbox subscription because the C drive can't support Dropbox beyond 100mb or so. How can I get Dropbox to install and use the greater partition (ie 'D' drive) which is 1.8Tb and would give me full use of my Dropbox 1Tb subscription? Reinstalling doesn't give me control over what drive Dropbox installs/uses. How can I twist Dropbox's figurative arms into using the larger partition?

Sorry to hear that and thanks for keeping us posted @Kshni!

For your convenience now, I will give you the exact steps you need to take to do this. Hopefully this will work for you following these:

  1. Click the Dropbox icon in the system tray.
  2. Click the gear icon (Preferences).
  3. Click Sync.
  4. Click Move… (Windows).
  5. Select the new location for your Dropbox folder.
  6. Let Dropbox move your folder and its contents to the new location (i.e. your D Drive).

Give this process a little time as the desktop application will need some time to re-index. Once it states "up to date" you'll be fully synced and ready to go.

I hope this helps and please let us know how this goes.

Hey there,

While the physical app always installs on the C:\, you can move the Dropbox folder with all your files to another location from within the app itself.

Hope this helps!

I've just tried that, it hasn't worked 😞

Do I need to reboot to get the silly thing to look at the D drive instead of the C drive?

I have moved my dropbox over to a 😧 drive and it's working great.  However, all my old data is still on my C: drive.  How do I remove it?

Supposing that you moved your Dropbox Folder to your D drive the right way and your desktop app is showing "Up to date" now - meaning that you're fully synced, then you should be able to delete them from your C drive without causing any issues to your Dropbox account @ehillman3308

Hope this helps and let me know if you need anything else!

Thanks for the reply. I did move the files the correct way. The Dropbox indicator on my laptop shows fully synced.

So just select the drive and hit delete.

THAT DOES NOT EVEN CLOSE TO WORK. THE PROGRAMMING LOOPS YOU AROUND ON C NO WAY THIS WORKS. I WANT MY D DRIVE. THIS IS REDICULOUS. I AM NOT PAYING EACH MONTH FOR YOU TO FILL UP MY C DRIVE SO I CAN NOT WORK. RUINED A DEADLINE. OK WE WILL ALL STOP WORKING AND DEAL WITH DROP BOX DRAMA. NOT SO FAST THAT MOVE FOLDER OPTION IS BS. THERE IS NO CONTROL OVER THE DRIVE. NO MATTER WHAT YOU DO IT SEEKS A C PATHING VAR. BS BS BS BS BS BS BS AND AA LOT OF MY TIME WASTED. NOT KEWL AND GET IT TOGETHER MAN.

So sorry to hear that, @mkguyver222

You should be able to redirect the Dropbox folder to another drive successfully. Are the steps offered in the thread not working for you? Are you getting an error?

What version of the desktop application are you running there?
