Can I somehow save my syncing settings to re-install Dropbox?

Explorer | Level 3

Hi,
I am about to completely reinstall my MacBook Air with macOS Catalina.
As I need everything back as it was after reinstallation, but also avoid restore from TimeMachine backup (debugging overall slow performance of macOS) I would very much like to backup the Dropbox configurations and settings, as I have a lot of selective sync and  Smart Sync defined on my current Dropbox application.

Is it possible to backup the Dropbox settings, and then after reinstallation of macOS and the Dropbox application, then restore the settings, so I do not have to manually set up everything in Selective Sync and Smart Sync once again?

Thanks for your support in advance!

BR,
Pjet Barn

There is no way to back up syncing settings of your local folder when you delete the app data with an Advanced reinstall. Deleting the app data, deletes all the traces of the application.

You can copy or screenshot your selective sync list to re-apply the settings manually after you reinstall.

Not ideal, I know, but it's a one way street in the case of the Advanced reinstall.

This "fresh" start is completely fresh, as I say..

Great first question @pjetbarn! Thanks for joining.

No worries about saving the Dropbox settings. A simple re-installation will not delete the syncing settings you have. So, everything will sync back the way you have selected before  the re-installation.

As for Time Machine. It is good that you wish to disassociate the Time machine files and Dropbox.  Here is a Community discussion explaining why it is not recommended to sync Time Machine and Dropbox

Feel free to ask more questions please!

Hi Fiona,

Thanks for your quick reply!

As I am about to completely delete all files on my macOS using Disk Utility, before reinstalling macOS (as some system files could be corrupted and hence slowing down performance on my Mac), I am not doing a simple re-installation.

So I would very much still like to know, how to backup the Dropbox setting, so I do not need to manually set all the settings once again, after complete reinstallation os macOS.

Thanks

Hi again,

OK, I see. I was hoping to identify a workaround, like TravisBKlein has done for same issue on Windows (https://www.dropboxforum.com/t5/Files-folders/Backup-selective-sync-settings/td-p/261569).

Nevertheless, I will go with your point of view, that a "fresh" start should be completely fresh

Thanks anyway!

This solution is, practically leaving part of the app data of the desktop app saved to re-use it. However, this would result to not having a fresh start, so I don't recommend this solution.
