Wanted to comment on a post. A message said I needed to register a username.
I did. Now the comment-capability no longer appears.

A comment on these forums? The thread may have been closed by a moderator. Do you have a link to it?

Sorry, no. There was a click here to login so you can comment button, and after I clicked it, there was no way to make a comment.
It's possible the button is appearing on a thread that has been closed -- but if there was a notification that said it was closed,
I didn't see it. (I was scouring the page looking for a comment button, so I suspect I would have seen it, had it been at all prominent.)

Thanks, though.

"Closed for Comments" should be indicated on Forum post

I don't see a category for "Forum Operation" so I'm posting it here, as the closest related category.

When a post is closed for comments, there is only a "negative" indication -- the lack of a comment box.

If you use the forum all day long, that's fine. You know what it means. If you visit once a decade, as I, then it's a mystery why the comment capability disappeared.

The problem is compounded by the appearance of the "click this to register or sign in, so you can comment" button. When you click it and sign in, you don't see a comment box. That's when things really appear to be broken.

The solutions are:

   1. Add a line somewhere that says, "This thread is closed for comments".

   2. Don't put up the "log in to comment" button on such threads.

Also:

   3. When someone accepts something as a solution, indicate which comment
it was that was accepted, and who accepted it.

Background:
I filed the post, Can't leave a comments. I just an email that said, "someone accepted one of the comments as a solution". I sure didn't. Examining it, I have no idea who did the accepting, or what it was they accepted, because the fundamental issue was not addressed. (The good news, though, is that the lack of a comment box on that post made it clear exactly what happened, and what the problems were. Hence this report.)

BTW: The editing capabilities are great! All forums should work like this one, wrt editing!

There often is such a line added, just like there was in this thread. It was added to your post dated the 27th by whomever originally closed this topic (a few people are getting a bit overzealous in closing threads that they feel are complete).

2. Don't put up the "log in to comment" button on such threads.

That's a function of the forum software in use here and cannot be easily changed.

The accepted solution is pinned to the top of the thread, just below the original post. Anyone can accept a reply as a solution, but it does not specify who it was. Again, this is a function of the forum software that cannot be easily changed.

Thanks for the response!

I get that the issues are a function of the software we're using. |
That's fine. I don't expect immediate results. Just please pass on
the issues as things to improve.

As for having "closed" indicated anywhere, I wish I was seeing what
you're seeing. I looked again, and I still see nothing like that.
Either something is not working right in Chrome, or I'm blind and
the indication could be a bit more prominent.

And again, when I scanned the post, nothing was indicated as accepted.
I looked at all of the responses, trying to figure out which one it was,
and I saw nothing.

OMG. It's another *negative* indicator. If the "Accept as solution"
button does NOT appear in the first reply, that means it was accepted.
Wow. Talk about subtle. That's a usability issue, imho.

(Please pass it on!)

thanks again.

(BTW: Another great feature here: The ability to view the discussion in
a popup while making a reply. Very handy. Please do pass on my praise,
as well as my complaints. Then by all by means close the thread!

Brilliant. Thanks. (He said, with enormous chagrin.)
You win bets if you asked me if they were there....
