Couldn't start Dropbox. on Ubuntu 14.04

Jan L.7
New member | Level 1

After running ~/.dropbox-dist/dropboxd

I'm getting this error

Couldn't start Dropbox.
This is usually because of a permissions error. Storing your home folder on a network share can also cause an error.

Please contact Dropbox support with the following info for help:

Hi Jan,

Maybe you solved this problem already, but if not, please try to install the latest version of the Dropbox client for GNU/Linux:

https://www.dropbox.com/install

and be sure that you're installing the application using the right credentials.

Hope this helps!

Hello

I'm highlighting this original post as I have the identical error - one which appears to be reported numerous times on the forum but for which no solution has been given.

I too am running Ubuntu 14.04 (headless) with all latest updates installed and DB 3.8.8

Below is the error report I receive. I have verified that /home/sphardy/.dropbox-dist/dropbox-lnx.x86_64-3.8.8/library.zip does exist and contains the reference file dropbox/client/ui/common/boot_error.pyc

Reinstallation or unlinking my dropbox account has no effect - I always get the same error

Please could someone offer a suggestion how to resolve this

///Paul

Hi Paul,

By reading that error output, it seems that there's a problem with the locale environment variables set on your machine.

A quick search on the Internet looking for the error "ValueError: unknown locale: UTF-8" or reading about how to properly set the locales on your computer should solve it.

I hope this helps!

Hello Aaron - thank you for the rapid response

And yes you appear to be correct. While debugging I noticed "apt-get" also giving me a locale error when I double checked my software was all up to date and was working on that in parallel with the DB issue.

It appears my /etc/default/locale file was missing the LC_ALL setting. I don't know how, have never touch the locale settings on this linux box which has had dropbox running perfectly until a couple of days ago. I suspect one of the system updates applied then.

Setting that variable appears to have corrected the issue

Thanks again for the pointer
