Couldn't start Dropbox; permissions error.

Couldn't start Dropbox; permissions error.

My dropbox on my Mac suddenly stopped working. It had been syncing nicely between my iMac and Macbook pro until tonight. I got the message saying there might be a permission error. I tried the following, but nothing worked so far:

1. Uninstalled the old version, and installed the new version. Same message.

2. I checked the old discussion on the web, and tried to access the "fix permission" button in preference. But the dropbox would quit when there was the error message, so the preference isn't accessible.

3. In system preference, I made sure the dropbox was selected in "accessibility" under "privacy". But nothing changed.

Anything else?

Thanks so much in advance!

Hi @linacui,

Try following commands (execute in terminal line by line):

sudo chflags -R noschg ~/.dropbox
sudo chflags -R nouchg ~/.dropbox
sudo chown -R "$USER" ~/.dropbox
chmod -R u+rw ~/.dropbox

Will be ask for your password (sudo). If the above isn't enough, execute also:

rm -rf ~/.dropbox

Hope this helps.

Hello - I got an Dropbox Error Message saying that I couldn't start Dropbox because of a permissions error. I uninstalled Dropbox and tried to reinstall it but I can't even reinstall it now! It again led me to the same error message and asked me to contact support with the follow for help:

Hey @linacui, welcome to the Dropbox Community; let’s have a second look together!

For starters, I’d need to analyze the full error log that corresponds to the permissions error message you're getting.

You can obtain the full text by clicking on the blue link within the error message pop-up. This will open a file with the full text of the error. Please copy & paste it in your next message, in order to further advise.

Thanks!

The final command line works! Thank you so much!

I couldn't right-click on files through Finder & received a permissions error. What can I do?

I am unable to right click on a file in dropbox and copy the link, which is one of my favorite features. I restarted finder and checked to confirm the finder extension is enabled. Now, I also cannot even start dropbox on my computer (macOS Mojave 10.14.5). I am receiving this error message:

Hey @IR4, thanks for tracing back the issue to its very beginning; I appreciate the detailed description!

Let’s start off focusing on the permissions error, which will probably fix the issue with context menus not loading as expected. In order to advise a bit more efficiently, could you include the message you’re seeing on the .txt message in the blue hyperlink on your next post here?

Thanks & I’ll be awaiting your next message!
