( 15:00:12 ) Jen: You are using the desktop application correct?
( 15:00:28 ) Visitor: That's true
( 15:00:38 ) Jen: And it sounds like your Badge is not working correctly as well right?
( 15:00:46 ) Visitor: Correct
( 15:01:30 ) Jen: One thing is you are on a beta build which would most definitely affect your syncing
( 15:01:44 ) Jen: Betas are in testing
( 15:01:54 ) Jen: We should try to get you on a stable build
( 15:08:41 ) Jen: Then scroll down to Early releases
( 15:08:53 ) Jen: Under Automatic time zone
( 15:09:19 ) Jen: Make sure it is off
( 15:09:31 ) Jen: Sorry that was an old set of steps, I need to update that.
( 15:11:09 ) Visitor: Lost you again Jen - yes I've switched early releases off now
( 15:11:29 ) Jen: Great, and I will stay with you until we are done, sorry you keep losing me.
( 15:11:44 ) Jen: So now that we have that switched off we need to reinstall
( 15:15:31 ) Jen: Do you see the Dropbox icon in your system tray?
( 15:17:42 ) Visitor: version ends in .195
( 15:17:49 ) Jen: Do you see something that say 81.4
( 15:17:53 ) Jen: says*
( 15:18:05 ) Jen: Is it 81.4.195?
( 15:18:17 ) Visitor: Yep that's it
( 15:18:22 ) Jen: Perfect.
( 15:18:30 ) Jen: So before you were on a 82.3
( 15:18:36 ) Visitor: Just waiting for the icon to come back properly
( 15:18:45 ) Jen: The 3 means beta and the 4 means stable
( 15:18:56 ) Jen: So we do have you back on the stable 🙂
( 15:21:54 ) Jen: starting not stating
( 15:22:03 ) Visitor: OH OH I can see that it says 133 at the end
( 15:22:16 ) Jen: It is the first 3 we are concerned with
( 15:22:26 ) Jen: Does the first 3 say 82.3?
( 15:22:46 ) Visitor: 82.3.133 is the version that's showing on the icon
( 15:23:05 ) Jen: Wow, that is crazy
( 15:23:11 ) Jen: I saw you on the 81.4
( 15:23:24 ) Jen: Then I now see you are back on the 82.3
( 15:23:31 ) Visitor: Mmmmm
( 15:23:57 ) Jen: Does your early releases still show off?
( 15:25:25 ) Visitor: Yes it does
Seems after "Early releases" is turn off, you keep receiving early releases, like you have used two different account. Would be reasonable to check for this, I think. Open your Dropbox application Preferences and turn to Account tab. You can see there your account email (in "Account linking" field). Keep this open and in your browser navigate to your account settings general tab (same view where "Early releases" sits on). Make sure again that "Early releases" is turned off and check that the email pointed on this page is the same as that on application Preferences dialog. The comparison have to be literal - symbol by symbol! Some mail provider (like Google for example) allow punctuations in account name, meaningless for the mail provider and ignored, but count as different for other services (like Dropbox), so be careful! For example "email@example.com" and "firstname.lastname@example.org" are same mail box for Google, but would be 2 different accounts for Dropbox. Again, check symbol by symbol!
Hope this will introduce some clarity.
Thank you for your interest, but I do not have two separate accounts. I have only had one since I started using Dropbox 7 years ago. Other than the changes when I moved from the original paid Dropbox to Dropbox Plus and any changes that were done to my Dropbox account by Dropbox 'upgrading' it in June.
If you read the transcript you will see that Jen were both logged in to this one account and we both saw the the Beta version update to the stable version (I did this twice) and then it reverted back to the 82.3.148.
I am at a loss - this is exactly how it has been since last week when I was advised to switch it off. I have logged in and logged out. I have tried to reinstall from the latest stable download on line and exe.
If there is something I have missed I'd be grateful for your advice.
Mmm... I can find out... What is the comparison result? The comparison between "Personal email" (you have masked above) and account email from Account tab on Dropbox application Preferences.
Are they literally same?
Wow... That's sounding really strange.
Are you sure that the "Early releases" switch was turned off when you reinstall the application last time? May be could be helpful installing some earlier stable version, which will be updated automatically almost immediately. Try at least... this one for example. Choose the offline variant. If this don't helps, would looks like a bug.
In addition unlink the application before reinstall and link it back after reinstall, so everything in the settings cache will be flushed.
Yes - definitely was switched off - you can see in the conversation that Jen and I went through that and then she was astonished to see that it went from the stable version back to the unstable one.
May I ask - what are the ramifications of unlinking the device I'm on? Any risks involved?
If you mean risk for your data - No, definitely. While you ask, as I already mention, the settings will be flushed, so if you use "Selective Sync", try to keep somehow the settings there and restore after that. That's it.
As a last resort you can also try advanced reinstall, if the above don't work.
