DropBox vs Google Drive

Helpful | Level 5

This morning, Dropbox asked if I wanted to sync it with my PC files. I did. Almost immediately, Google Drive told me that my files had been deleted, but gave me the option to restore them, so I did. However, my Drive has stopped syncing. I have contacted G Drive twice and they tried to help me but it just didn't work. Everything seems to be wired differently after the DropBox thing. I have reasons to think this is what made my G Drive go haywire. I tried uninstalling Dropbox but that hasn't helped either. There are some extra folders on my computer now that are named Dropbox but they can't be deleted. Any ideas? I'm not computer-savvy at all so please keep it simple! Thanks in advance.

Hi @Sadhna , thanks for posting on the Community!

It sounds like you enabled the automatic computer backup feature in the Dropbox desktop application, which would moved files to the Dropbox folder from your Desktop, Documents and Downloads folder.

If you also have Google Drive running, and I do believe they have a similar feature there, then it most likely caused a conflict since both cloud services are interacting with each other. This is something that isn’t recommended at all, since it can result in sync issues, slow performance and data deletion.

Try disabling the computer backup from Dropbox using the steps in the above article to see if this helps. Regarding the Google Drive backup feature, you’d need to contact them for further assistance once you’ve resolved the Dropbox side.

Hope this helps to clarify matters!

Yes Jay! That's exactly what I suspected. It's annoying to go through this hassle (particularly if you don't know what you're doing) and not to be told about this possible conflict by Dropbox. At any rate, thank you so much for explaining it and for the link to the article.
