Dropbox failing to start on OS X - KeyError: 'Failed to copy description!'

Hi all,

Just today (this afternoon), while out at work, so no changes on the computer, DropBox fails with the following error:

[get_extra_trace_info failed]

The menubar was circling, and said that DropBox was upgrading itself. Trying to restart it throughs the error above.

I've rerun the installer - same thing.

I've run the permissions fixing steps - same thing.

Renamed $USER/DropBox and created a blank directory - same thing.

Anything else I should try?

Hello everyone,

I got another reply from support and another version to try. This time it appears to be working on my computer now: Mac Pro/El Capitan.

Here is the message and link to the new version I got:

The development team has released a new beta version of the Dropbox desktop application that may resolve the issue you are experiencing.

If you would like, you can download this version of the Dropbox desktop application from the following link:

If this resolves the issue, you should be able to continue using this version as it will update automatically to the next available build going forward.

I hope this works for everyone too.

John

I don't have an answer, as I got the EXACT same message and upgrade spinning ball as you did this evening. I'm on a Mac Pro running El Capitan and did nothing to it. It was working yesterday and today I've got the same issue as you. I sent in a support request. Hopefully someone has an answer.

I am having the same problem, but under Sierra 10.21.1, and my home folder is on a network.

I've found a poor workaround for those cases where documents need to be uploaded, or pulled down - dropbox-uploader, which is a fancy bash script. README has the details, but I'm using for cases when the manual effort is worth it.

https://github.com/andreafabrizi/Dropbox-Uploader

Once installed, uploading a folder called SomeFolder (or syncing it) is something like:

./dropbox_uploader.sh -p -s upload /Users/alex/Documents/SomeFolder  /Documents/

It's not perfect, but it meets my needs until auto-syncing through the GUI works again.

I also have exactly the same trouble on MacOS 10.9.5 from Monday 16 Nov and my home folder is provided by the afp

and ~/Dropbox is symbolic-linked to a local volume.

My trouble (the trouble by nt) is solved by
cd ~
rm -rf .dropbox
ln -s (Some new folder in a local volume) .dropbox

Version 13.4.21 works fine until it has updated to version 14.4.19. Is there any way to turn the updating off?

I just got a reply from support to try a beta version. Here is what I received:

The development team has released a new beta version of the Dropbox desktop application that may resolve the issue you are experiencing.

If you would like, you can download this version of the Dropbox desktop application from the following link:

https://www.dropbox.com/downloading?build=15.3.19&plat=mac&type=full

If this resolves the issue, you should be able to continue using this version as it will update automatically to the next available build going forward.

I'm traveling and not at my computer that has this problem, so can't test until Saturday. Someone can try it and see if it helps.
