Dropbox icon no longer opens app - trying to selective sync

Explorer | Level 3

I have a Surface pro 3 with 64 bit windows 10, all updates.  Have dropbox 70.4.93 icon - up to date on  Right click. But no way to get to gear icon for selective synch options.  Went through multiple reinstalls in past.   How can I selectively synch?  Can it be done on the web application without the gear?

Hey there @rtvernick, while our Selective Sync feature is device-specific (unless you’re working on a Dropbox Business account, where you may be able to utilize the Team Selective Sync functionality if you’re an admin), you should be able to see the icon on the top-right hand corner on the pop-up window that appears when you click on the Dropbox icon on your system tray

If you can’t see the  icon, I’d appreciate it if you could include a screenshot of what you’re currently viewing on your end when you’re facing this discrepancy (omitting personal info), so as to further advise.

Once I have these details, I’ll try to address your initial inquiry in a bit more depth. Thanks!

When I mouse over the icon get 70.4.93 and up to date.  When I right click nothing happens.   If I left click the icon, It takes me to file exporer dropbox.  All previously selected files are synched with my dropbox files.

Hmmm.. Could you tap on the Dropbox icon with your finger once (@rtvernick)? If the app is Up-To-Date, then if this should reveal the Notifications window on our Dropbox app (& the  icon should be on the top right-hand corner there). Please let me know how you get on with that!

nothing happens when I tap the icon.   If I mouse over it and left click it takes me to my previously selected and synched dropbox folders.

Hey @rtvernick, please accept my apologies for the slight delay in getting back in touch with you. It seems that our app isn’t working as it should. Would you mind giving our Offline installer a go (i.e. it should eliminate any syncing discrepancies that may arise) & see if that remedies this issue?

Spoiler
  • Stop Dropbox (If needed) by clicking the Dropbox icon in the system tray at the bottom of your screen. >Click on the gear icon in the Notifications panel and select "Quit Dropbox".
  • Uninstall Dropbox: [Note: If Dropbox was installed by a Windows administrator in Program Files, you will need admin permissions to remove the application.]> Click on the Start button on the bottom left of your screen, and select "Control Panel" (Windows 7), or type Control Panel at the Start screen or start menu, and click on it (Windows 10, 8 ).> Click "Uninstall a Program". >Select Dropbox from the list of programs and click "Uninstall".
  • When the uninstall finishes, reboot your computer. This will make sure the uninstall is complete.
Once you get a chance to re-install our app, please do let me know of the results & I’ll do my best to check back with you on this discussion. Thanks for sticking with me & I’m looking forward to hearing back from you!

No difference.   I can selectivly sync by reinstalling dropbox and going through the setup process, but no gear icon or way to get to it.   The offline installer does have a problem on the Surface pro:  The full screen box is greyed out and it is difficult to enter the set up screen with the cropped information.  I was able to register my account by using the Google account registration screen.    Any other suggestions to this difficult problem?  Is there any other way to get to setup on the desktop application?
