Dropbox installer doesn't run

Dropbox installer doesn't run

I had to uninstall dropbox and now it won't reinstall. I've tried both the online and offline installer. I've tried older versions and I've tried turning all security software off and messign with compatibility. Nothing works. I suspect it didn't uninstall completely, but Dropbox doesn't provide any removal tool. Please help!

I have the same problem. I unistalled dropbox for particular reasons and have tried for 2 days to reinstall it. I downloaded the installer version 1.3.57.1 it gets to "waiting to download dropbox" and then just stays on this window without ever stopping. When I cancel the installation, it tells me "installation not complete, are you sure you want to cancel".

I also tried to install an older version and it tells me that I have to download the newest on.

This is very frustrating, surely, someone at db has an explanation and solution for this, thank you for a prompt follow-up.

I am having the same exact issue.  It said I was running an outdated version so I try to update and nothing.  I thought the old version was a conflict so I uninstalled it.  Now when I download the installer, tried both online and offline one, the file comes in and when I click on run it just spins for a few seconds then nothing at all.  I have a ticket from Monday, but have not heard back from them.....

Hope someone can figure this one out.  I have been trying for days to make this work.

I finally got it working: I first used the CCleaner to delete all the browser cache, history, cookies etc. and system temporary files, memory dumps etc. and then rebooted. I then ran the installer (which oviously had downloaded correctly) and it downloaded the app just fine.

I used the cleaner because all the build-up of temporary stuff can impact certain functions and in this case, it looks like this was what caused the temporary downloading malfunction.

Ok, thanks for the tip.  I installed Ccleaner, ran it, cleaned everything out, restarted, turned off firewall and antivirus.  Went to the dropbox page, downloaded the installer and the same thing....   I just spins and dies.  No errors, no message, nothing comes up as running in control panel....    So frustrating.  I am the team Admin and I back up a lot.  This is scary that I can't get it going.....

Hi,

Sorry to hear you are having issues with the Dropbox installer, the application is not much use if you can not install it! :grimacing:

I would recommend using the instructions outlined in the Advanced users section of the following Help Centre article, this should help to clear out the old app data and resolve the issue for you.

So very true...

Dropbox had been working perfectly for years. Then it told me it was out of date and would stop working within the next 28 days if I didn't upgrade. So I tried upgrading. No joy. Tried the offline installer. No joy. Unistalled in case there was some conflist and tried installing again. No joy.

I've followed all the instructions/suggestions so far and still no luck (clearing cookies, deleting Dropbox settings files.  Neither the installer nor the online installer work.

The event log shows:

The Dropbox Update Service (dbupdate) service failed to start due to the following error:
The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion.

Something worked for me and I got it installed.    I did the suggestions of running the Ccleaner.  I also did the advanced uninstall.  I would clean, restart and try.  Delete the install file, advanced uninstall, clean, restart, redownload, run as admin and so on.  One time yesterday afternoon, it just worked.

Hi.  I also had this problem so I thought I'd share my experience.  I found this thread whilst trying to resolve the problem.

I tried CCleaner (that installed OK) and cleaned things up, and that didn't allow either the installer or offline executable to run, even after a restart and even in admin mode.  The blue circle spun for a brief time, then disappeared as before.

I uninstalled DropBox, using the Advanced method as linked to above, restarted, and I still couldn't re-install DropBox.

Eventually I worked out how to start Windows 10 in Safe Mode (not straightforward, compared to older Windows) and that did allow me to install the offline executable.  Once that had installed, I restarted normally and everything was fine.  The only "problem" was that DropBox then appeared to be re-uploading all 230Gb of data, however, it was just comparing what was already uploaded and re-indexing, despite what the status messages implied.  I just left that running and went to bed!

So, I still haven't resolved how to run the installer normally, but I have resolved getting the latest version of DropBox installed.  I no longer get threatened with it not working in so many days time.  I'm reasonably sure that if I'd gone straight to safe mode and not uninstalled first, that would also have worked.

From this thread and others it seems that DropBox have a problem.  Other apps installed OK, just not DropBox.  Without any kind of error message, it's really hard to know what was happening.

Hope this helps someone!
