Dropbox "just leaking"

Dropbox "just leaking"

Although Dropbox is working, I am getting constant network activity, and the following messages get written repeatedly to the system log:

Tue /18Aug15 18:10:46 Dropbox[225] *** __NSAutoreleaseNoPool(): Object 0x1aa1dac0 of class OC_PythonUnicode autoreleased with no pool in place - just leaking
Tue /18Aug15 18:10:46 Dropbox[225] *** __NSAutoreleaseNoPool(): Object 0x1aa28360 of class NSCFString autoreleased with no pool in place - just leaking
Tue /18Aug15 18:10:46 Dropbox[225] *** __NSAutoreleaseNoPool(): Object 0x1aa2a260 of class NSConcreteMutableData autoreleased with no pool in place - just leaking
Tue /18Aug15 18:10:46 Dropbox[225] *** __NSAutoreleaseNoPool(): Object 0x218cd70 of class OC_PythonArray autoreleased with no pool in place - just leaking
Tue /18Aug15 18:10:46 Dropbox[225] *** __NSAutoreleaseNoPool(): Object 0x1aa2fc70 of class __NSCFDate autoreleased with no pool in place - just leaking

Basically, the recent Dropbox update in Mac OS X 10.6.8 is faulty. I would like you to do the following please :

1. Restore the previous working version for my account
2. DISABLE auto-update for my account

Thank you

Hi Chris,

Could you please confirm the version of the Dropbox application that is running on your computer? In case you're running a version under 3.8.8, our latests stable release, please update your client to that version of Dropbox to see if it solves the problem.

You can download the mentioned version of Dropbox from here:

https://www.dropboxforum.com/hc/en-us/community/posts/204685739-Stable-Build-3-8-8

Thanks!

I've downloaded 3.8.8 but I'm still getting Console messages:

My system log is now nearly 4GB big! I am going to have to quit Dropbox until a solution to this problem is found.

Sorry, I should have said "I was running less than  3.8.8 (3.8.6) but have now downloaded 3.8.8 from your link - unfortunately the problem is still there".

I repeat what I asked up top - please download an earlier version pre-3.8.6 (or let me download) to my account, and then - once it's working - DISABLE auto-update on my account.

Re: Dropbox "just leaking"

I have done some investigative work on this and I have discovered what triggers this problem (though it remains a Dropbox bug):

- the Console messages (above) only appear while Dropbox is actively sync'ing; when everything is "up to date" AND SAFARI IS NOT RUNNING, the messages stop

- Safari causes the messages to appear every few seconds, even when the menu bar icon does not show that Dropbox is actively sync'ing

- I have a symlink to the ~/Library/Safari folder in my Dropbox folder. This is purely to keep my bookmarks and history up to date, there are no other Safari components I need to be sync'd.

So here is my conclusion: 1) there is a bug in Dropbox which causes the "leaking" messages in my system log while DB is sync'ing but 2) Safari causes ?constant sync'ing? which means the messages are pouring into the log every few seconds.

Please now address this. I'm sure you have enough information to proceed. If you cannot resolve it, please restore older versions to my account (one-by-one) until the problem stops, and then disable auto-update for me.

Note to "Rich" - I was impressed with the speed at which a Dropbox representative responded to yesterday's post. However, when his advice failed, there was no further response. Is it any wonder then, that I raised another topic? If Dropbox introduced some consistency about their speed of replies (even if only to say "sorry our first advice didn't work, we are now investigating further" - rather than ignoring me - it would go a LONG WAY to improve customer relations).

Hi again, Chris,

Sorry for the belated response, but we had our engineers taking a look at your issue.

Now they're aware of it and can confirm that this is a normal behavior. Those messages are part of the normal logging that the Dropbox application performs on your computer and you can safely mark them to be ignored.

I hope this clarifies your question!

Ok Aaron ... thanks for that. The problem is, those messages are being written ALL THE TIME! and are filling up my syslog.

However.. I've tracked down the problem. I put my Safari folder in Dropbox, mainly so my bookmarks and history would be backed up. As the Mac is updating files in there all time (i.e. while I'm browsing etc), therefore Dropbox is sync'ing that folder all the time too, and those messages constantly appear as a result.

So I've taken the Safari folder out of Dropbox, and created a symlink only to the bookmarks file. That seems to have stopped the messages except for when Dropbox actively syncs.

Thanks for your attention to this.

This is considered NORMAL?  My logs contain thousands and thousands of these things.  Dropbox is essentially spamming my logs.  Perhaps it should be less verbose?
