Endless Syncing & Downloading

Why is Dropbox in some cycle of dowwnloading & syncing files out of the clear blue? I have a free personal account which I rarely use. I keep it pretty empty because of the limited file space. Now, today, Dropbox is in some sort of download/syncing frenzy. Says it's downloading almost 5k files, my box is full & it's syncing with an estimated time of 2+ days. What the hell? I haven't changed any settings, added any files or received any files. Is there some sort of Dropbox meltdown occurring?
