Error: "the app didn't start" when opening pictures on Windows 10

New member | Level 2

When I open Dropbox, all looks normal. Folders open and I can even see previews of my pictures. When I try to open a picture, it has an error message "the app didn't start". I have uninstalled, reinstalled Dropbox & restarted my computer.

Hey there @Lakeshorefarm, from what I understand, you’re previewing these photos from the desktop app, is that right?

If so, please bear in mind that the Dropbox folder is just like any other folder on your computer but with syncing capabilities. As such, to preview photos and images stored in your Dropbox folder, you’ll need the relevant third party app available on your computer.

Nonetheless, in order to ensure troubleshooting, could you please provide me with the following info so as to have a better understanding of your concern:
  • Could you please send me a screenshot (without any personal info) of the error message that you’re seeing?
  • Could you also let me know if the error message appears for all photos that are stored in your Dropbox folder?
  • Finally, could you ensure that the desktop app is running and up to date by locating and clicking on the Dropbox icon that should be next to your computer’s clock?
Let me know what you find!

Hi, did you work out what was wrong? I am having the same problem after not using drop for a really long time on my desktop. I've uninstalled & reinstalled, should be working but I can't view any photos...

Hey @Kellie0765, sorry to hear that you’re also having this issue.

Although it sounds like you may not have the third party app required to open these images, could you please send me a screenshot (omitting sensitive info) of the error message and what the Dropbox icon reads when you click on it?

Thanks in advance!

Did you find a solution?
It was working fine last night on my desktop and this morning I just keep getting the “The app didn’t start” message whenever I click on any of my photos?

Hi all
I did find a solution for my issue. I checked the program windows was opening .jpg's with by default and it was 'Photos (recommended for Windows 10)'. I changed this to the standard windows photo viewer and after that the photos opened.
Find it in start, settings, apps, default apps and select photo viewer. This worked on my old laptop that was upgraded to windows 10 however I'm looking at my new only ever had w10 desktop at work and I don't see the option to use the old version of photo viewer, for what that's worth...
