Re: Dropbox QT/OpenGL Errors on High DPI display

Re: "Failed to create Opengl context"...

Situation normal here: error statement sometimes pops up when I don't use dropbox, sometimes it doesn't appear when I do.  Usually, I don't even see it until I close all of the other windows at the end of the day.  And...it doesn't affect my use of dropbox at all.

I have nothing but sympathy for those are not as fortunate, because DB is great software.  However, I hope you can understand if I don't try any cures to remove this bug.  As it stays benign, we are going to coexist.

Best wishes to all for good outcomes, and festive holidays.

(of course, if this bug turns mean, I'll be back!)

As you mentioned that you’ve already followed all our suggestions here, it would be more efficient if we continued through our support system from this point on

Efficient for whom? I have done that several times, tried each suggested fix, with zero results. Just installed the latest Beta 87.3.127. Immediate error message, then "Dropbox unexpectedly quit". Restart the app, error message, crash. This is like a bad joke, Lucy holding the football for Charlie Brown.

Back to 86.4.146, which at least doesn't immediately crash. Instead it displays "performing one-time update", and is no longer syncing.

Yay team.

(edit) Oh great. Now 86.4.146 won't run either.

Yup. I am completely Dropboxless. I'm also thinking that's probably a good thing, except for the part where I paid for another 10 months or so of "service".

Dan - not a dropbox team member, just someone who used to have this problem! I'm running 87.3.131 - which seems to be even later than the version you had - on a fully patched Windows 10 machine and all is well.

I did a complete install-uninstall-reinstall of 87.3.131, and huzzah! Everything works. I even have For You/Recent/ Notifications windows fully working for the first time since this debacle started.

Re: I'm seeing an error message "Failed to create OpenGL context for format QSurFaceFormat"

I was having this problem with my Surface Pro 4. I tried installing and uninstalling Dropbox, drivers, restarting, setting environment variables, guessing and tabbing my way through blank menus - nothing worked. Then I changed the scaling of the display to 100% vs the normal 200% (hiigh DPI display), and I could see the menus again! I linked my account and syncing worked.

Unfortunately turning it back to 200% results in the dropbox menus not opening, but at least I can sync now.

Dropbox QT/OpenGL Errors on High DPI display

Here are a few issues I've worked around related to display scaling. I'm using a MS Surface Pro 4 (Intel Iris 540) and Dropbox 87.4.138.

  1. On installation, I get the "failed to create OpenGL context" error with a blank setup screen. I updated my drivers, still didn't work. I was unable to link my account until I tried turning scaling to 100% instead of the default 200%. I get the normal screen at 100%.
  2. I can't see any menus on 200% scaling. I have to revert to 100% to change settings or interact with the menus, and change back to 200%, which is not ideal because of some quirk of Windows scaling where certain icons and text remain blurry after switching back to 200%
  3. Even on 100% scaling I get "content not loaded" when clicking the Dropbox icon on the tray.

I have the variable QT_AUTO_SCREEN_SCALE_FACTOR set to 1 (True). I tried setting QT_OPENGL to 'software', but it didn't help. There are some other variables at https://doc.qt.io/qt-5/highdpi.html that I haven't tried but might help.

After trying to fix the issue some more, I found that even though Windows Update said my computer was up-to-date, the November 2019 Windows 10 release had not rolled out to my device. To force the update, I used windows update assistant, after which I re-updated my drivers. Now Dropbox works correctly, even at 200% scale!
