I have deleted dropbox completely on my Mac but the space is still taken on hard drive.
There seems to be no evidence that dropbox still exists on my laptop, yet the hard drive is full due to "System".Any advice how to clear this space as laptop pretty much unusable due to this.

Have you rebooted your computer since deleting Dropbox from the computer?
Also, did you delete the Dropbox folder after uninstalling the desktop app on this computer? If so, have you tried clearing the Trash bin to see if that does the trick?
