Hi I’m having a frustrating time
getting a fix from Dropbox support. i don’t my issue is difficult but waiting for email replies is taking forever.
My drop box is saying I have permission errors. After much sluething around it looks like my user name is incorrect. Ie the thread that drop box is using is spelt incorrectly. Support chat had me delete the Dropbox app then we got disconnected. Now chat wants me to talk to escalation which is just emails back and forth. We are talking 6 months. Does anyone have ideas on how to get ‘to’ Dropbox support other than emails or chat or have an idea how I can fix my problem. Thanks in advance

Hey @Eric W.7, I understand that your current situation may not be ideal & I’m here to help as much as I can on my end. So, let’s get started! 
 
Generally speaking, we’ve discussed how you could get going with the re-link here, however if you’re familiar with terminal commands, you could adjust permissions for the newly-synced folder to have this fixed. 
 
If you’ve previously followed the steps relayed on any of these resources & you haven’t been able to reach resolution, then it would be best to continue working on that on your existing ticket. I’ve made sure to include a copy of your comments on your ongoing correspondence & I’ve increased your support priority internally to help you expedite matters.

Hi Jane. Thanks for stepping up.
I’ll be back at my iMac sat. I’ll have another go at it. That said. If Dropboxes chat support staff can’t fix it and they know the system id think my chances are low. I have no technical knowledge of computers. It’s been down 6 months. My PCs work so we’ve been using them. Over the last ten days I’ve been spending dedicated time trying to get timely responses from Dropbox to no avail. Your quick response through the community has me refreshed there might be sun behind the cloud.

Feel free to take as much time as needed to get going with that @Eric W.7! I can see that our specialist has also sent you a brief message back on your escalated ticket, so hopefully you’ll get back on track soon. 
 
That being said, when you chat in to my colleagues, they can guide you through with some basic troubleshooting, however if the issue is more complex they have to forward the request to a higher-level technician. If you reach out again to us via chat, this will not lead to the escalated ticket but will default to start anew from scratch & that’s why I’m asking you to reply back to the email chain that’s reached our specialist’s inbox. If needed, they’ll send over a breakdown of the steps, in order to make it easier for you to complete them if you’re facing any challenges along the way.

Hi @Eric W.7,

You shouldn't believe in everything you read in Dropbox documentation. What I mean here is that using tilda ('~') together with 'sudo' is very very bad idea! Try modify commands to more consistent form and after that use them. :wink:

Sure thing @Eric W.7! I’ve been slightly modifying your post omitting personal info. 
 
So, it’s great that you’ve now tried the terminal commands, however in order to make sure we’ve done it effectively, we’d need to modify those according to your Mac User name for the ~/Dropbox part. 
 
I can see that your User profile is currently named “EricWight”, however I’d need the whole path to this folder, in order to adjust my reply. As I can’t access your device details here, it would be best if you included the message you’re seeing on the .txt message in the blue hyperlink (i.e. on the third screenshot) on your reply to our team specialist, who can cross-check this based on the info we have on file. I’m merely suggesting that, as there should be two paths to the Dropbox folder & we’d need to determine which is the right one. 
 
If it’s not too much to ask, can you quickly nudge our higher-level technician on the ticket? I’ve already made a note of your comments, so you should be good to go from where we’ve left off here.

so i'm really confused.

I received an email from the dropbox excalation team suggesting a fix which included the tilda and sudo.

now you are saying it's a bad idea?

Hi @Jane,

That's true in every one case, not only while Dropbox directory isn't on the default location! While the context is changing (exactly what 'sudo' does) the directory pointed by ~ also changes. :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

True @Здравко, it should try to look for the Dropbox folder, however I’m suspecting that older settings could be sending conflicting info here & that’s why I suggested having a closer look at the error log. 
 
Maybe the new one you're getting @Eric W.7  isn’t the same as the previous one, so it would be more efficient if we retained continuity & followed-up accordingly along the way. I'm not implying that the troubleshooting done thus far isn't right, on the very contrary; I'm saying that we may need to adjust based on your results!
