I want to remove dropbox

Hi,  I've decided to use an external harddrive. I'd like to remove dropbox from my computer. Someone from chat was trying to help me but it turns out that there is no "un-sync" option because the preferences option that should be in the upper right corner doesn't exist for me. I can't unsync my files. If I uninstall dropbox, will it automatically unsync the files? I also want to erase everything in my drop box without erasing the files on my harddrive....how do I do this?

Also, the person in chat recommended that I reach out to the support email. I got a message saying:

"Thanks for reaching out to Dropbox support. Replies to this email are routed to an unmonitored inbox and will not be answered by our support team. Your technical support options depend on what kind of account you have."

Well, an hour before I emailed them, I tried to delete my account (and hopefully wipe all my files from the drop box server that way) but I only suceeded in removing the free trial (which I got when I bought a new Dell computer). So who knows if I'll get any help from the support email.

I don't want to have to do a Windows Reset for this problem, and that wouldn't remove all my files from the dropbox server anyways. I'm really upset about this.

Hi Walter,

Thank you for replying. I found the icon for dropbox in the task bar at the bottom of my screen (Before this, I was logging into the dropbox site and I saw my initials but the preferences option wasn't there). The drop box icon was hidden on my task bar and I had to click an arrow on the task bar to see it. Then I was able to click on it. When I clicked on the intials for my name, I saw the preferences option there. I had been looking in the wrong place. I've since removed all files from drop box and uninstalled it. All is well.

Hi there @artist134; thanks for joining our Community!

If you're referring to our selective sync feature, the app's preferences should be reachable via your system tray or menu bar.

If you're not seeing the Dropbox icon there, it means that the desktop app is not running on your computer and there's no syncing taking place.

If you uninstall the application from your computer, the files in your Dropbox folder will remain on your hard drive as a local copy.

Let me know if you have any follow questions.

Walter, I, too, want to transfer all my files back to my pc from dropbox, then cancel dropbox. Would you please give fuller instructions / steps to do that. I don't understand the steps noted above, and I don't want to risk losing anything. Thank you.

Hi there @LonerPine; thanks for joining our discussion here.

To better advise on your query, could you clarify if you're using the desktop application on your computer, or if you're only accessing your Dropbox files through a web browser?

I am still very confused about how to take all the files on dropbox and put them back on my PC. I am using the app and I already synced whatever dropbox could out of my 1 TB PC. I hate this so much, I do not want my files on dropbox. I looked into preferences and unselected everything in sync, yet this dumb program is still syncing everything. How do I move literally every single file back to where it first started before I accidentally synced and backed up everything.

Hey there @Boris Bespartochnyy; thanks for joining the discussion here.

Am I correct to assume that you enabled the computer backup feature somehow?

What is the desktop app reporting in your system tray/menu bar
