Installing Dropbox via Curl command on MacOS

Installing Dropbox via Curl command on MacOS

So, I have created a script for new Mac machines in my organisation that uses the Curl function to download applications. I can Curl a download of Google Chrome & Slack (Surprisingly!). However when I try to download the application via terminal I get the following errors:

  • Authentication - requires a token to download the application (stupid..)
window._csp_external_script_nonce = "*********</script><meta content="IE=edge, chrome=1" http-equiv="X-UA-Compatible" /><link href="https://www.dropbox.com/downloading" rel="canonical" /><link href="https://www.dropbox.com/downloading" rel="alternate" hreflang="en-us" /><link href="https://www.dropbox.com/en_GB/downloading" rel="alternate" hreflang="en-gb" /><link href="https://www.dropbox.com/da_DK/downloading" rel="alternate" hreflang="da-dk" /><link href="https://www.dropbox.com/de/downloading" rel="alternate" hreflang="de-de" /><link href="https://www.dropbox.com/es/downloading" rel="alternate" hreflang="es-la" /><link href="https://www.dropbox.com/es_ES/downloading" rel="alternate"

Literally that's the first part and it just moans.

  • Posts HTML - just curls the webpage in plain text.

Why is it so difficult to Curl the application installer so that I can install it on more than one machine?

Btw, I don't want to use brew or cask to install it as the business has strict rules.

Any help greatly appreciated 🙂

Hey there @jimmyp - sorry to hear you're having issues with this. Do you get any specific errors? Can you send some screenshots perhaps? I know you've mentioned an authentication error as an access token is needed for the app's download but a screenshot of the exact error(s) you get would be way more helpful.

While we're at it, can you let me know what type of an account you're trying this on? Is it an individual account or a team one? If it's a team account, are you an admin of the team or only a member?

I'm only asking because team admins can silently install the Dropbox desktop application on all team member computers at once using the enterprise installer method. Dropbox Business team admins can run the installer remotely with a managed-software solution or deployment mechanism. You can find more info about this here:

https://help.dropbox.com/installs-integrations/desktop/enterprise-installer

I hope this helps to some extent and I'll be waiting for your reply to have a better look into this. Thank you!

Hi Walter,

Thanks for getting back to me so quick.

It is impossible for me to send you the whole error as it is basically just the dropbox website in HTML but I found this:

      define("modules/constants/request", [], function() {
                var o = {"REQUEST_START_TIME": 1562671183013, "__esModule": true, "REQUEST_TRACING_ENABLED": false, "REQUEST_ID": "0c0918075486bd9e61500df95591d0e3", "PAGE_LOAD_TIME": 1562671183, "LOGGED_OUT_X_DROPBOX_UID": -1, "IS_HTTP2": false};

I have a business account but only the directors have access to the whole account due to privacy concerns.

I checked the enterprise page but I am only picking up information about Windows, is there no way to do this for Mac? I have also asked for access to the Dropbox account to see the options, could you please provide me the steps to find the automation instructions within the Dropbox admin page?

Thanks,

Jimmyp

Thanks for the swift response too @jimmyp - most appreciated.

Firstly, note that without admin rights on the team account it will be difficult to do this for other accounts (even if they're part of the same team) and I'm not really aware of a way for automating this process for Mac users.

On that note, since you're compiling your own script, if it still fails when you do that as a Team Admin (you'll need admin rights on the team for such action in any case) would it be OK if reached out via your Dropbox email address so we can have a further look into this?

If I'm not able to help with our current resources, I'll make sure to have your case reviewed by a higher level technician (this is why I suggest reverting this communication to email at this point).

Let me know here and we'll take it from there Jimmy!

Thanks for the cooperation @jimmyp !

Upon creating a new ticket for you, I bumped into your existing one and reached out through that; I hope you don't mind.

When you get the chance, please take a look at your inbox and we'll take it from there.

It goes without saying that you can take as much time as you need to gather all the information we'll need to look into this.

Until we speak again, enjoy the rest of your day Jimmy!
