Is it normal that my android app takes up 588Mb?
I only have 34Mb of offline files so it seems a little excessive for the total space taken by my app to be 588Mb even after the cache has been cleared. Facebook takes about the same but I expect such bloating from FB 
Perhaps there is some setting I need to have?

Would you mind letting me know which version of the mobile app you have installed and your device's OS version?
On my personal device the app takes around 250 MB, so I can suggest trying to reinstall the app to see if that does the trick.
