Is it safe to use a unknown proxy server?

New member | Level 2

For some reason, I need to use a proxy to make my dropbox working well.  On the internet, there are many free proxies servers. My question is that is it safe to use these servers directly? Please do not give me answers like "you'd better not to do that.". I need some technique doc. (or explanation) to support the answer.  As a naive expectation, I think Dropbox has such kind of protection algorithms.

Can you not use some of the standard proxies out there like Google?

I'd be cautious over doing it because the proxie is basically then tracking all your data - its aware of whats being sent and received. While the Dropbox data is secure.... what about others?
