Mac Migration to new machine using Time Machine and Dropbox with Smart Sync

Explorer | Level 4

Naturally I can't find something that exactly or comes close to my question.

I am upgrading from my old Macbook Pro 2012 to a new iMac 2019, both on the latest version of MacOS Catalina. I plan to use Time Machine to back up from my old Mac and restore to the new one. I have close to a terabyte of old files in Dropbox that use Smart Sync and are stored online that are also backed up using Time Machine.

I just tested restoring a file from Time Machine that's marked as on-line only and it failed. I tested it again with one marked as local and it succeeded. Below is an ls of the files, with the -l@ option to show the extended attributes. The .docx failed and the mp3 succeeded.

ls -l@ <filename>

-rw-r--r--@ 1 me wheel 118402 Jun 28 2013 Document.docx
com.dropbox.attributes 83
com.dropbox.attrs 28
com.dropbox.placeholder 118

-rwxr-xr-x@ 1 me wheel 158278 Nov 6 2005 ge.mp3
com.dropbox.attributes 81
com.dropbox.attrs 28

Am I correct that the "com.dropbox.placeholder 118" attribute is giving Time Machine issues and the only possible way to do this is to shut off Smart Sync, let the files download so Time Machine can do the full backup I need to migrate?

Hey there @RogerBenson!

Online only files are not fully saved locally and this has an affect to your Time machine restoration, apparently.

Control click your Dropbox folder and set it to Smart Sync Local. Allow it to complete syncing.

Kindly keep in mind that your Dropbox files cannot be affected by the update of your OS, they are safe on your Dropbox cloud.

Ping me if you need more help!

Thanks Fiona, not quite what I am looking for. I'm trying to see if that attribute is what's causing an error with restoring from Time Machine a file marked as online only with Dropbox.  If that were a symlink, it would be a different story as MacOS knows what a symlink is, they've been around in Unix for decades.

I'm wondering what it is about this attribute that Time Machine doesn't like.

Not really able to investigate why the Time Machine restoration process is giving you this error.

I think this Community discussion can be helpful.

Hope other users facing the same issue can share some more info here.
