Mac OS 10.13.6 Dropbox app not starting

Procko01 New member | Level 2

I am traveling with my laptop. Left home this morning and evertything was fine with files up to date and synched.

I keep my Dropbox folder on a dedicated Lacie 5TB drive that I always travel with. The Dropbox folder is all that is on the drive.

Tonight when I rebooted my computer I am stuck with the Dropbox app giving me the following error message:

Couldn't start Dropbox.

This is usually because of a permissions error. Sotring your home folder on a network share can also cause an error.

For mor information click on the buton below.

and the message I get from the link is:

I have read other similar problems about going to the Dropbox settings and holding the option key down to reset the permissions, but I am unable to run the app at all. So I unable to access the permissions folder.

Hey @Procko01, thanks for checking in with us.

Since it sounds like you have the Dropbox folder placed on an external hard drive, could it be that the Dropbox desktop app started before your drive was recognized by your computer, which in turn didn't have the chance to see the Dropbox folder?

Could you make sure that the external hard drive is connected to your computer with the relevant permissions and try once more?

Keep me posted!

No - the Mac boots up and all the drives are recognized - then all the apps start - Dropbox is the last of the Apps group to start.

I have had this Mac laptop with this same configuration (laptop with a Lacie portable 5TB drive) for three years - I have never changed or altered the permissions for the drive  - designed to access ALL of my Dropbox files for my clients while I travel - it has worked perfectly every time until today.

Hey @Procko01!

Try an advanced reinstall. It should fix this error.

Let us know if this helped.

Thanks!

I did the advanced reinstall as suggested and now the entire Dropbox folder is rebuilding instead of relinking to what I had existing - seems like a waste of time that will take days which is very difficult when you are travelling on business and have to deal which less than ideal internet speeds. I don't understand why the setup that I have used without issues for a couple of years now does not work - I did not change anything.

I understand this is difficult when you are on the go and appreciate your feedback.

What I can say, everything can be working fine with apps for years but technical issues occur. We are here to solve them with you and provide you with the right steps.

Whenever you get the time, please try this troubleshooting step and let me know if it solved the issue.

Have a nice day!
