Hi, I moved a folder from my icloud drive into a dropbox folder and now the files don't seem to exist, can they be recovered or downloaded?

Hey @robinhassell09, I'm sorry to hear you're having trouble with this!

Can you let me know how you moved the files over from iCloud?

Could you send me a screenshot of any errors that you might be getting when you try and open the files?

Looking forward to hearing back from you!

Hi Daphne, I moved the folder by dragging it from iCloud to Dropbox. I’m guessing as I didn’t download the files first I’ve only copied the file names across and not the actual files?

Thanks

It would seem like that's indeed what happened there @robinhassell09.

If you have iCloud set to optimize storage, so only a placeholder of the file is kept on your computer, then this would explain why the files can't be opened.

You would need to download the files locally on your Mac from the iCloud service first, so that you can copy over the whole file to your Dropbox folder.

If moving the files out of iCloud removed them from your iCloud account, you should be able to restore them with these steps.
