My desktop app is stuck indexing files, how can I fix this?

Explorer | Level 3

I also am having a forever indexing issue. Consistently burning about 30% of CPU.

  • I have re-installed the app.
  • I have dispatched the fleet of pandas for bad files.
  • I have tried checking for symlinks... without success. 
    • Opened an elevated command prompt
    • navigated to the dropbox directory
    • typed "dir /a:l /s"
    • result: File not found
    • of note, dir /a works. dir /l works. but not the combined command.
    • I downloaded "NTFS links view" to check for symlinks, pointed it to the dropbox folder, and found none
  • the main dropbox folder has the blue "syncing" icon, however...
    • none of the folders within have the blue icon.

Stuck indexing 1, occasionally 2 files. 

Some advice please!

Thanks for getting back to me!

Just to clarify, can you let me know which version of the desktop app you're running? If you have a beta version (denoted xx.3.xxx ) then I would recommend downgrading to the latest stable version by:

  1. Going to your Account settings page online here.
  2. Toggling off the option "Early releases" at the bottom of the page.
  3. Downloading the latest stable version from here.

Can you also let me know which version of the OS you're computer is running?

Let me know what you find and we'll go from there - Thanks!

Hey there @lawtj,

Can you let me know if you see any errors in the sync status of the desktop app when you click the Dropbox icon in your system tray? If the app is stuck on a specific file, it should also show the specific file name too, do you see this?

Otherwise, when you click the Dropbox icon, click the profile pic/initials icon in the top right of the window and choose "View sync issues" from the menu and see if anything shows up there.

Hi Daphne, took me a while to reinstall again and see if it helped. No luck. To answer your questions:

1. No errors on sync status. Now it is continuously 'syncing' between 1 and 2 files, forever. I can't tell which file it is.

2. When I click "view sync issues", I get a blank window. No text or buttons. Seems like a problem??

It's been about a week since I downgraded to the stable version... I'm going to tentatively say this has fixed the issue.
