Newbie Installation confusion

Newbie Installation confusion

New member | Level 2

Just got a new system from Acer.  It offered me a year DropBox subscription for free.  I signed up and created a DropBox account.  It seemed to install something, I have a shortcut to a fileview window of the dropbox folder on the harddrive and it named it DropBox.   There are 2 pdfs in there, Get Started with DropBox, Get Started with DropBox Paper.    It seems that I need to install the DropBox app? maybe but when I try it wants me to setup another account and pay.   I checked the website trying to see if the shortcut on my Desktop IS the actual app or not but all the website talks about is using DropBox Business which doesn't help me.   Can someone let me know if the icon on my desktop that just shows the file view of the dropbox folder on my C: drive is the actual app?   Do i just copy files into that and it saves it online somewhere?   And when I sign in to Dropbox website do the files show up there?   I am very confused.

Hi @Gonzosmom; welcome to our Community and happy Monday!

Quoting from the relevant Help Center article, note that when you download and install the Dropbox desktop app, three things are added to your computer:

Since you're on Windows, you can also pin the app to your desktop or taskbar.

I hope this helps clear things up and I'm just a post away if you have any more questions!
