I'd be grateful for advice. I recently installed Dropbox on a new Macbook Air. Everything synced fine except 90% of document and other files now on this computer do not have dates on them so I cannot sort by date, which is essential.

Yes it was on List view. However, it seems to have resolved itself after shutting down and restarting. I should have tried that first before posting.! I still don't understand why it happened though, a first in many years of use.

Whether you're not seeing the modified dates through Finder or the Dropbox desktop app, could you please check if you've selected to preview your files as a list?
If you still don't see them, could you send me a screenshot (without any personal info) so that I have a better visual?
