No more Mac OS Finder-level locking on files/folders?

New member | Level 2
New member | Level 2

I can't find any mention of this anywhere, but within the last couple of weeks, I lost the ability to use finder level locking on any files in my Dropbox folder. Anywhere outside that folder hierarchy everything still works as normal, nothing has changed in my OS (10.12.6, I don't auto-update), this is strictly a change in Dropbox behavior. A large part of my production process depends on this fundamental Mac OS function. Can I restore this ability? Is there something I'm missing?

Hey @ghuish, thanks for checking in with us on that!

Could you pull an example folder’s “User Info” for me & include a screenshot of the options you’re seeing? Can you see the box there? What happens when you click inside it, does it appear as checked or does it disregard your selection?

In order to focus on that a bit closer & see how Dropbox comes into play, I’d appreciate a screenshot (omitting personal info) showing your folder structure & what you’re seeing on the User Info window.

Thanks again for taking the time to work on that with me!

Thanks, Jane. I'm including a movie file, we'll see if it works. Easier to show the behavior I'm seeing, But I've got a screeshot too if this chokes.

Basically, the box appears checked for a second or so, and the lock icon pops up. Then it unchecks itself. This is happening with every file I've checked from the Dropbox folder and below. Not happening anywhere outside of that hierarchy.

Note; yep, no .mov files allowed, here's a link to it in my dropbox. Again, let me know if you need a pic instead;

https://www.dropbox.com/s/kj5e8gr6987fgdk/dropbox_lock.mov?dl=0

Movie shows normal behavior for a file sitting on my desktop, and the incorrect behavior for a file sitting 2 levels down in my Dropbox folder.

Thanks for the video @ghuish; that was more than I expected!

Now, I wouldn’t say that the behavior outlined on the video is unusual, since Dropbox will need to have read & write access/permissions to these files, however I’m interested in focusing more about the change in behavior you’ve noticed. Could you elaborate a bit on when you first noticed that happening & what used to be the case previously?

I look forward to hearing back from you. Thanks again!

New user account, since something odd seems to have happened to my last login.

It is unusual, since neither Dropbox nor any other application I've ever used has ever done this before, and it's not consistent with a fundamental concept of the Mac since the original Macintosh Filing System. This just happened in the last few weeks, and there was nothing wrong with the previous, system-consistent behavior, it worked just fine. The OS can copy files with this attribute, and so can Dropbox. All my DB files/folders have always stayed intact when copied to the cloud.

I appreciate your ongoing cooperation @ghuish1/ghuish! I’d like to forward your inquiry & findings to a team specialist in form of a question. Would it be okay if I created a Support ticket on our system on your behalf?

Thanks again for keeping in touch with me!

Perfect @ghuish, I’ve just created a ticket on our system that’s connected to the email address for your ghuish profile. Can you have a look at your inbox for my message & let me know here if you can’t see it?

Thanks again for your time & efforts!

Same problem here.

All of sudden, a bunch of MacOS-locked (in Finder: right click -> Get Info -> check "Locked") files in a shared Dropbox folder lost their locks.  This cause people to override them by mistake.

Furthermore, locking those same files in the same way as before (in Finder: right click -> Get Info -> check "Locked") no longer works.  After a second or so, the Locked checkbox reverts back to unchecked.  That is identical behavior as in Ghuish's video for zMasterFolder_dropbox earlier in this thread.

What happened here?  What is the ETA to get this behavior back?  it is crucial to how my company uses Dropbox.

thx.

Hey @FKatEE, I appreciate the detailed message!

It would be more efficient if we discussed that checking back on the details we have on file for your account after this point, so I created a support request on our system on your behalf.

Please have a look at the inbox connected to your Community login when you have some spare time & I’ll touch-base with you asap. Thanks again!
